An important development took place over
the summer. After much deliberation and discussion, The School
of Physical Education (HPER) will be known as the School of
Physical Education and Tourism Management (PETM). The name
change incorporates the Department of Tourism, Conventions,
and Event Management (TCEM) into the existing school name.
Nick Kellum, Dean of the School of Physical Education, said
that, “This name change resulted from a significant
growth in the TCEM program since adding a four-year, baccalaureate
degree to its existing associate degree three years ago.”
Responding to the question of opposition
reported that the School’s Faculty Organization, Indiana
University HPER alumni, and IUPUI’s Chancellor Bepko
were unanimous in their vote to change the School name. They
believed that the name change will be good for the school
as well as IUPUI. The school is currently planning collaboration
between the Physical Education and TCEM department. This plan
includes exchanging and intermixing certain courses between
each program.
When asked how he thought students would
react when they learned of the name change, Dean Kellum replied
that, “Many students in the two departments already
know each other and that there will be cooperation and understanding
from both sides. With respect to future plans, the school
will be working with different departments to increase tourism
awareness and to add new courses. In addition, professors
teaching some classes between departments will enable the
school to become stronger in the future.
Several changes will be necessary in order
to accommodate the name change. School stationery, brochures
and publications, university signage, and the school’s
website will all reflect the new name. Dean Kellum also expected
the school to become more visible, resulting in increased
enrollment. Students who are selecting a major will be able
to recognize both the Physical Education and TCEM departments
and may decide that it is the right major for them.
Dault Receives Distinguished
Alumni Award
Speedway resident and Professor Emeritus
of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, Raymond

by the School of Hospitality Business, Michigan State University
(MSU). At a lavish Chicago ceremony, the School Director and

the award recognizes distinguished leaders in the hospitality
industry who have given time and talents back to the school.
At the celebration Cichy said, “Today
we are delighted to honor Raymond Dault during our alma mater’s
75th Anniversary Year. He studied and learned under remarkable
faculty, and then went out and not only succeeded, but furthered
MSU’s good name and reputation. We thank him for giving
back to his alma mater with his time, talents and treasures.”
Hundreds of MSU alumni traveled from around
the world to attend the ceremony recognizing leaders in the
hospitality industry.
Dault (BA ‘50) is an alumnus whose
career has embraced both the practice and teaching of hospitality
management. He opened and managed the Student Union at the
Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, then directed
the Department of Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management
at Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis until
his retirement in 1987. Ray initiated the Alumnus of the Month
series while president of the School Alumni Association in
1972, and recognition to others has been his signature.
He has served in the Indiana Hotel &
Motel Association, and stresses the need in the industry for
the “servant’s heart,” cited in Matthew
20:36. He lives that principle, as well, dressing as Santa

Upon his retirement, the alumni at IUPUI
initiated an endowed scholarship in his name as an appreciation
of the contributions to IUPUI and the hospitality industry.
He was also instrumental in the creation of another endowed
scholarship in honor of Per Moller, a hotelier who contributed
much to the city until his death in 1996.
Faculty Promotions & Awards
It was announced at the August meeting of
the PETM Faculty Organization that certain faculty members
had received promotions to new ranks and status. The Indiana
University Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Dr.
Raphael Bahamonde and Dr. Katie Stanton from Assistant Professor
to Associate Professor effective July 1, 2002. Bahamonde and
Stanton were also awarded tenure status, effective
July 1,2003.
Also effective July 1, 2002 was the promotion
of Mr. Jim Bennett of the TCEM Department from Lecturer to
Senior Lecturer. Bennett has been a member of the faculty
for fifteen years. The university’s new initiative for
senior lecturer status reflects the valuable role of faculty
who are not on a tenure track.
Dean Kellum also announced several teaching
awards. Dr. Sotiris Avgoustis and Dr. Eileen Udry both received
2002 Trustee Teaching Awards. Dr. Avgoustis and Dr. Johanna
Doecke were recipients of the School of Physical Education

Congratulations to all these faculty members
on their respective recognition.

"A New Track Record!!!"
By Jim Bennett
The school is experiencing significant growth
that is reflected in the number of students and credit hours
generated for fall semester enrollment. These preliminary
numbers are compared with the enrollment figures from fall
semester 2001. Headcount increased 9.5% from 452 to 495, while
credit hours increased 3.2% from 7,667.5 to 7,916.5. Many
thanks to all those whose hard work and aggressive recruiting
brought about these results.
World Basketball Games
The TCEM Department will complete a Visitor
Profile Study during the August 29 to September 8, 2002 international
sport event. The city of Indianapolis is host to the prestigious
event featuring teams from 16 countries. The city has projected
$1 000/day/visitor in revenue. To determine the visitors’
views of the city and its attractions, TCEM students enrolled
in two courses; Marketing and Visitor Behavior, will survey
400 visitors to define their activities as visitors and their
opinions of the city’s attractions, accommodations,
and services. Compared to a similar study undertaken in 2001
for the World Police and Fire Games, the study’s results
will yield tangible evidence of how well the city measures
up to other sport cities. Who knows, perhaps the city will
one day make a bid for an Olympics!
Renovation of PETM Facilities
During 2001-02, two major renovation projects
were completed. In the Physical Education building, the student
lounge was remodeled by adding new carpet, tables and chairs,
and computer work stations. The room was renamed to the Informal
Learning Lab. Students benefited from this renovation with
space appropriately designed for individual or small group
learning. In the School of Engineering and Technology, ET
201, food laboratory, was reconfigured to reflect more diverse
usage. An island for food demonstrations was removed allowing
the space to be used for tables and chairs for the wine tasting
classes. To enhance the room, carpeting, paint, and a new
ceiling were added.
