THE INFORMER
Indiana University School of Physical Education and Tourism Management
The Walt Disney World College Program

By: Jennifer Pierce

I am currently working the Walt Disney World College Program in Orlando, Florida from August until January 2003. The program is very different from what I had imagined. I work at the All-Sports, Music, and Movies resort as a Merchandise Hostess (A.K.A. a cashier). We normally have a 40-hour workweek, but since September is officially the start of Orlando’s off-season, we only work around 30 hours per week. The $6.00 per hour pay rate is not that much, but they say that it’s enough for us to live on after they take $80.00 per week out for rent.

We live on the Disney property in sponsored apartments, which are actually very transport to and from work, and occasionally to the store. Of course the biggest perk is that we get free admission into the parks. Disney also offers courses such as Human Resources Management, Communications, and Hospitality Management. There are many planned activities and events for us, so we never get bored.

There are several unique situations we encounter while on the program. The assigning of roommates is one of the most unique. Roommates were all just thrown together with the hope and expectation that everyone will get along. Another challenge is placement at our work location. Most of us did not get the positions that we position was left over - such as merchandise or custodial. Even though there are many challenges in the program, I really have met some great and interesting people. There are people representing all 50 states as well as most of the countries in the world. All of us live, work, and learn together.

And The Beat Goes On
by Ed Schilling

A great source of pride in the School of Physical Education Teacher Track is the placement of our students in jobs. We have had a great record that continues again this year. Achieving success is a combination of the following: 1.A tradition of excellence by our graduates in the teaching field; 2. Our graduates in the field notifying us of openings; and 3. The pursuit of school administrators to hire our graduates, The following is a listing of our more recent graduates and their positions:

A Season of Change for the Department of
Tourism, Convention, and Event Management

by Nicole Young

As the autumn colors replace the green leaves on the trees, so is change reflected in the TCEM Department. It began with the school Incorporating TCEM into It’s name. It is now known as the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management. Along with this new identity, new faculty members were added to the Physical Educational/TCEM family. Today I would like to introduce you to Amanda Cecil.

Amanda Cecil is a true Hoosier! She grew up in Anderson, Indiana. She attended Anderson High School and led a very active life, playing volleyball for the school and being involved in several social activities. Desiring to nurture her passion for sports, Amanda majored in Sports Marketing at Indiana University at Bloomington. There, she flourished in the “sports haven” of the state. Her interests in sports continued to grow by working on the steering committee and completing an internship with the Athletics Department.

After completing her bachelor’s degree, Amanda availed herself of several opportunities. She interned with the RCA Tennis Championships. It was during this experience that she was introduced to the field of special events. Amanda then accepted an Internship with the Ivy League at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She served as marketing assistant to the Director of Marketing. Still looking for ways to grow professionally, Amanda enrolled in graduate school at Ohio State University. While completing a master’s degree in Sports Management, she again interned, this time with the Columbus Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. This internship soon led to a permanent position which Included assisting in convention services and sports sales. For her, this was the best of both worlds.

Amanda’s career path soon led her to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she worked as a corporate event manager for a company based in Atlanta, Georgia. Amanda continues to work with that company, but recently transitioned into working as an independent consultant for the company.

Presently, Amanda is at “home sweet home”. The pursuit of a doctoral degree has brought her back to Indiana. Amanda and her husband recently purchased a home, so she will more than likely be here for a while. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer In the TCEM Department.

Along with her expert knowledge, hands on experience and education, Amanda’s sweet, high energy, “girl-next door” personality will be a great asset to the department. Welcome home Amanda!

ACCOLADES FOR TCEM
by Jim Bennett

The October 9-16 issue of NUVO magazine was their annual “Best of Indy” reader’s poll. This Issue contained testimonials from both NUVO readers and staff members. From the information gathered, NUVO staff members selected Indy’s best. It includes everything from restaurants and bars to shopping and museums.

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management at IUPUI received the staff pick as the “best program for hospitality careers. The article described TCEM as “a dynamic program, prepares students to work in the hospitality/tourism Industry as they earn an &S. or B.S degree.” The article went on to say, “Just as dynamic as the course offerings are the people running the program and the students. They form a close-knit community in an environment where mentors are passionate about the industry and students are eager to learn about their field.”

In the Food and Drink category, NUVO recognized Something Different and Snax as the “Best Restaurant in Indy”. The restaurant is owned and managed by Sue and John Schneider. Sue is a graduate of the TCEM program. Says NUVO, “...a dining experience not enough of Indy has taken the change to appreciate. Their food is innovative and the setting, either inside or on the deck, is incredible.”

Congratulations to the TCEM Department and one it’s graduates on these honors!
