Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to school in another country? Did you ever think of how different things would be? The language, the surroundings, the food, the overwhelming ness just gives me Goosebumps. For some students here at IUPUI that is what they have experienced. Our country to them is foreign.

Jennifer Carey is a senior in the TCEM department. Jennifer is from the Bahamas and came to the United States to study. Jennifer searched colleges on the Internet and knew she didn’t want live on the west or east coast. She chose Indiana for its great location.

Searching the Internet, Jennifer found IUPUI’s web site, which is what finalized her decision to come to Indiana. Jennifer was first enrolled in the Kelly school of business. While taking classes she came across the TCEM department.

Now enrolled in the TCEM department she has already completed her internship and is ready for graduation. When I asked Jennifer if she was going to stay in the United States or go back to the Bahamas she replied by stating that she wants to gain more experience by working in the U.S. and at a later time she will return home to the Bahamas.

Carel Smith attended a university in Jamaica before she came to the USA. In the summer of 2000, on a cultural exchange program with the American Hospitality Academy, Carel came to Indianapolis to finish her training. She was introduced to IUPUI by a few friends, however she quickly sought out the Tourism Department and Dr. Brothers.

She has had a rough time adjusting, but she credits Pat Biddinger and Dr. Brothers for helping her through the transition. Although she’s not familiar with the city, it is much different than what she expected. Horses, cowboys, farms, and miles of cornfields were expected; she’s half right! She loves the city and finds it remote only when traveling home to be with her parents.

In her free time, Carel loves horseback riding, nature walks, and mountain biking. Although she’s not sure how long she will stay in lndy, she does hope it’s long enough to graduate.

Yun Bai moved to Indianapolis from China to continue his studies in Tourism and Hospitality Management. Initially Yun studied in Switzerland where he completed a two-year degree in hotel management. After he finishes IUPUI’s Bachelor of Science degree, he will return to China. Recently his mother and a business partner signed a management contract for a hotel located in one of China’s most famous tourism destinations and he is eager to return to China to use his knowledge and experience to help manage the hotel. Yun misses China and his family — and definitely the food.

Emiko Miura is a native of Japan. After she arrive in the US and was enrolled in classes for English as a second language, her instructor recommended a tourism major. She hopes to be a tour guide in Japan when she completes the baccalaureate degree. Emiko finds the Christmas season in the United States very interesting. The decorated houses and buildings are unusual compared to the holiday season in Japan. She misses all of her family and friends. One of her best friends recently married and Emiko was sad to not be there for the happy day.

Umut Kanbak is also a TCEM student. Umut is originally from Turkey. Umut explained that Turkey is a developing country and that life is at a Umut started working at a very young age and his first job Umut was not paid. In return for work he was given experience. His hard work paid off because before Umut got his high school diploma he had his own bar and restaurant. By the age of 21 he owned a piece of a catering company.

Umut got the idea of coming to the United States while he was studying in London. When visiting some friends who were studying at Butler University Umut heard about the TCEM department. Umut liked the idea of having both lU and PU in one school.

After graduation Umut is planning to get into postgraduate studies. He currently has a company concentrating on International Trade. He hopes to have more free time to dedicate to the business after graduation.
