THE INFORMER
Indiana University School of Physical Education and Tourism Management
Look How We Have Grown

By: Jennifer Minor

The School of Physical Education is growing rapidly! In over a year the enrollment rate has increased by 14%. Dean P. Nicholas Kellum attributes many factors to this increase such as the university’s newly formed partnership with Ivy Tech and the standards of admissions being raised. Ivy Tech and IUPUI have developed a strategic relationship connecting the two institutions together. It is now possible for a prospective student to enroll in selected classes at Ivy Tech and have no problem transferring the credit to IUPUI. This serves as an attraction factor to students who have other responsibilities such as a full time job or a family to fit in the classes they will need to complete a degree.

Kellum also recognizes the Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management as adding to the number of majors. Although the number of credit hours is higher for the Department of Physical Education, he feels that the Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management Department has a lot to offer considering the growth of tourist attractions in Indianapolis. Kellum said, "Indianapolis is the amateur sports capital of the world. The way the city is designed, with everything being so close together and within walking distance, it attracts so many national events and in return tourists." With all the upcoming events scheduled to be in Indianapolis, there is sure to be a high demand for Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management graduates.

The Master of Science degree in Physical Education has also contributed to the increase in enrollment. Recently the department graduated 2 students with a Masters degree. And for the upcoming school year, 24 students have already been admitted to the program. "The masters program for only being a year old is going very well. Our hope is that it continues to do so, and I have confidence that it will," said Kellum.

To continue the rise in enrollment the school hopes that new brochures, the school’s website, and even recruiting prospective students through industry will help. If you have not had a chance to look at the new brochures, stop by the main office and pick one up. It includes an abundance of information including a program overview, what you can attain with either a Physical Education Degree or TCEM Degree, and special facilities. Also, check out the website:

A Time For Change
By: Jennifer Minor

Although it is a subtle change, the degree in Fitness and Sports Studies has attracted many new students. Fitness and Sports Studies, formerly known as the General Physical Education Degree, offers a different focus than the Exercise Science program. A Fitness and Sports Studies degree is geared more towards students who want a very applied "hands on" focus. This degree prepares students for job positions in personal training, fitness, and sport/recreation agencies. The Exercise Science Degree offers more science and math courses while preparing one for a job in the club industry, corporate fitness, strength and conditioning, and athletic development. Many majors are preparing for graduate work in exercise science, biomechanics, and physical therapy. The Fitness and Sports Studies degree offers flexibility to identify areas of student interest. Students may pursue a specific area through more in-depth studies.

With the change in the department, classes have been added to assist with the completion of this degree. For the upcoming school year the department is offering a class called Legal Aspects/Risk Management in Sports Settings. When asked about any other classes being added Dr. Betty Jones, Department Chair and Associate Professor, said, "A lot of proposals are in the works." Dr. Jones commented on the department’s search for full -time professors saying that the department has three vacant positions to fill.

The School of Physical Education welcomes Lisa Angermeier-Howard. Angermeier-Howard comes from Eastern Michigan and will teach Health Education classes. She is an IU graduate. "Lisa is very qualified and a good asset," said Dr. Jones. Lisa will also be assisting the department by reviewing the health and teacher education curriculum and matching to state standards. Recently the state has changed its policy regarding the education curriculum and is in a reaccreditation process. "Instead of a set curriculum, each student will have to meet standards within the program," said Jones.

The department is hoping to add a Certificate in Physical Training to its list of credentials. The certificate has been approved within the department, is ready to go and is waiting on approval from higher school officials. Many of the courses that will be offered coincide with the Exercise Science Degree. For those of you already involved in the School of Physical Education you should start your recruiting now. With the new degree program and the rate of enrollment rising Dean P. Nicholas Kellum said, "With two years of double digit growth it will eventually level off. What it is going to come down to is how many students can we actually take?"

The University Event Specialist
By: Angela Perry

Event specialists can be found in the traditional places such as corporate settings, conference centers, convention centers, resorts, hotels, convention and visitor bureaus, and specialty businesses. The definition of the event specialist has grown and so has the array of locations in which they can work. Universities and colleges are examples of places where many opportunities exist for the event specialist.

IUPUI is engulfed by events that take place in a variety of locations across campus. Located in the Administration Building, the Communications and Marketing Department and External Affairs Department have their hands in a variety of ongoing events. Located in the University Place Conference Center, the Office of Alumni Relations is constantly turning out events for IUPUI graduates. The University Place Conference Center also holds many event specialist jobs. People are needed to plan continuous seminars, workshops, and conferences.

These are just a few examples of the many job opportunities found on the IUPUI campus. The event specialist job market is growing and awareness is needed so job searches can be performed outside the traditional boundaries.

Meet the TCEM & PE Associate Faculty
By: Jim Bennett

Trying to operate a successful college academic program is a major task. With only four full-time faculty members, the TCEM Department finds this especially challenging. In order to present an extensive program curriculum each semester, it becomes necessary to hire qualified part-time faculty to meet ever-growing student needs. The TCEM Department welcomes the following part-time faculty for the fall semester and notes the courses they teach: Susie Benko (Mechanics of Meeting Planning), Brian Borlik (Wine Selection), Sally Brown (Global Tourism Geography), Bob Frash (Computers in the Hospitality Industry), Carrie Fulbright (Introduction to Convention Management), John Goss (The Development and Management of Attractions), Doug Haney (Hospitality and Tourism Law), Steve Ransone (Human Resource Management for the Service Industries), and Dr. Neal Singletary (Essentials of
Nutrition).

The PE Department utilizes the expertise of part-time instructors to teach a variety of courses from yoga to first aid. Part-time faculty are: Doug Adamson & Lowell Johnson (Karate & Self Defense); Barbara Badger (Yoga); Paige Craige (Dance); Jim Arvin (Drug Use in American Society); Johanna Doecke (Stunts & Tumbling, Personal Health,Swimming); Steve Franklin (Soccer); Louise Goggans (Marriage and Family), Nancy Haskell (Human Sexuality); Christine Jackson (Taekwondo); Barbara Kazanjian (T’ai Chi Ch’uan); Wanda Leffler, Gayle McGinnis and Linda Parr (First Aid); Jim McMahon (Ballroom Dance); Stephanie Moore (Personal Health); Mark Scott, Ken Smith and Robert Stubbs (Scuba); Neal Singletary and Barbara Switzer (Human Nutrition); Russell Taylor (Golf); Lance Scheib (Football); Brian Smith and Rich Lord (Tennis); Stephanie Wheeler and Chris Weaver (Aerobics).

Three graduate assistants are teaching: Matt Davis, a 2001 IU graduate; Devin Brennan, a 2001 graduate from the University of Evansville, and Courtney KisseI-Willett, also a 2001 University of Evansville graduate.

The School of Physical Education is indeed fortunate to be associated with a high-caliber group such as this. The students should also feel privileged to be able to draw upon such excellent industry resources in pursuit of their degree requirements. It is these people who augment the departmental teaching mission and we look forward to our continued association.
