Dept. of Physical Education’s Motor Activity Clinic Enters It’s Successful Fourth Year

By: Katie Stanton, Ph.D.

Since beginning in 1997, the Motor Activity Clinic has provided swimming and motor skill instruction to over 150 children with disabilities in the Indianapolis area. Under the direction of Dr. Katie Stanton, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Physical Education, what started as a method to provide on-site practicum instruction for students taking HPER P398: Adapted Physical Education, has become a one-of-a-kind service in the Indianapolis area. Families who have children with special needs ages 3 to 15 can apply for the program during the fall and spring semesters. Students from IUPUI’s Dept. of Physical Education work with the children eight Saturday’s during the semester reinforcing lecture information and allowing students to practice their teaching methods.

Adapted physical education is a federally-mandated service for students with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA states that all students with disabilities must receive physical education and those services can be specialized as needed for success. While many students receive appropriate physical education services, more than half do not. The purpose of the clinic is to not only provide additional physical activity services not provided in schools, but to also teach students and families about the importance of physical education for students with disabilities.

Dr. Stanton reports that the success of the clinic is primarily due to the families who support the efforts of her student staff. As families learn about the benefits their children gain from participating, they become increasingly determined to make sure the clinic remains at IUPUI. The success of the Motor
Activity Clinic has resulted in $17,000 of funding from the Indiana Down Syndrome Foundation. The money was used to purchase motor skill equipment, parking passes for volunteers, and scholarships for families in need.

As the Dept. of Physical Education grows, Dr. Stanton has tremendous hopes for the Motor Activity Clinic. “While we have been successful in providing services to many families, we are limited by the number of student in my class or those who volunteer. It is my hope that we can increase our numbers so that many more families benefit.”
