Ph.D.
Since beginning in 1997, the Motor Activity
Clinic has provided swimming and motor skill instruction to
over 150 children with disabilities in the Indianapolis area.
Under the direction of Dr. Katie Stanton, Assistant Professor
in the Dept. of Physical Education, what started as a method
to provide on-site practicum instruction for students taking
HPER P398: Adapted Physical Education, has become a one-of-a-kind
service in the Indianapolis area. Families who have children
with special needs ages 3 to 15 can apply for the program
during the fall and spring semesters. Students from IUPUI’s
Dept. of Physical Education work with the children eight Saturday’s
during the semester reinforcing lecture information and allowing
students to practice their teaching methods.
Adapted physical education is a federally-mandated
service for students with disabilities under the Individuals
with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA states that all
students with disabilities must receive physical education
and those services can be specialized as needed for success.
While many students receive appropriate physical education
services, more than half do not. The purpose of the clinic
is to not only provide additional physical activity services
not provided in schools, but to also teach students and families
about the importance of physical education for students with
disabilities.
Dr. Stanton reports that the success of the
clinic is primarily due to the families who support the efforts
of her student staff. As families learn about the benefits
their children gain from participating, they become increasingly
determined to make sure the clinic remains at IUPUI. The success
of the Motor
Activity Clinic has resulted in $17,000 of funding from the
Indiana Down Syndrome Foundation. The money was used to purchase
motor skill equipment, parking passes for volunteers, and
scholarships for families in need.
As the Dept. of Physical Education grows,
Dr. Stanton has tremendous hopes for the Motor Activity Clinic.
“While we have been successful in providing services
to many families, we are limited by the number of student
in my class or those who volunteer. It is my hope that we
can increase our numbers so that many more families benefit.”
Association Honors Schilling
By: Jim Bennett
IUPUI is home base for three key layers in
the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation,
and dance (IAHPERD). Ed Schilling, an Associate Professor
of Physical Education, received the organization’s Honor
Award in November in recognition of outstanding service. The
honor was bestowed upon him at IAHPERD’s annual convention.
Schilling was credited for having increased
student participation at the event. IUPUI has won awards for
student attendance 13 of the past 14 years.
Lisa Picek, a Physical Education major and
member of the IUPUI swim team, is the new president-elect
of IAHPERD’s student section, the Council for Young
Professionals.
Dr. Nick Kellum, Dean of the School of Physical
-Education, is IAHPERD’s retiring Executive Director.
Off To
Camp!
By: Jim Bennett
Since 1995, students in the TCEM Department
have been required to take the L291 course in Food Production
Principles at Camp Brosius in Elkart Lake, Wisconsin. This
course, offered during the first summer session, enables students
to prepare and serve meals to the School of Physical Education
students who are at camp participating in leadership and management
activities as part of their degree program.
Students enrolled in TCEM L291 will have
two sessions
from which to choose: May 16-24, or May 24-June 1.
Students enrolled in TCEM 306 and 310 will
attend camp during the first session, May 16 - 24.
Specific details about camp for each of these
classes will be forthcoming.
