A Busy Year Draws to a Close!

By: Jim Bennett

The Indiana University School of Physical Education Honors Day Convocation was held on Sunday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the University Place Conference Center on the IUPUI campus. Dean Kellum presided over this prestigious event, which served to highlight TCEM and PE student achievements over the past year. In addition to Dean’s List awards for Spring 1999 and Fall 1999, the convocation recognized the recipients of many departmental awards and scholarships. Family and friends of the award winners, and benefactors or benefactor family members who assisted with the award presentations were in attendance. Following the formal recognition ceremony, all were invited to a reception celebrating heir accomplishments.

Day and Nefouse Scholarships Announced

By: Michele Thomas

We are pleased to announce more new scholarships for the TCEM department. The Bill Day Outstanding Junior Scholarship and Outstanding Senior Award as veil as the Nefouse Scholarship have been added.

The Nefouse Scholarship has been established by Mr. Edward Nefouse (BS, TCEM, 1999). The scholarship will help a deserving student with an average G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0 who is currently working in the industry and will be based upon need. Mr. Nefouse and his wife currently reside in San Diego, CA.

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the gift in memory of Mr. Day will annually assist two TCEM students. Mr. Day was a wood craftsman all of his life. Upon his retirement, he began hand carving wooden bowls. He shipped bowls all over he world from his shop in West Lebanon, IN. Mr. Day has a bowl on display in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. The donor describes Mr. Day as the “epitome of tourism and hospitality.”

These gifts are very valuable as ye strive to build scholarship funds to assist our students as hey reach their educational goals. Thanks again to our donors.

Open House Planned for the TCEM Department

Dean Kellum has announced July31 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. as the date and time for an open house to showcase the new offices for TCEM faculty and staff. Alumni and area hospitality leaders will be invited.

Spirit of Philanthropy Honors

Each year, the Indiana University Purdue University Campus comes together for the Spirit of Philanthropy luncheon, during which individuals, corporations and foundations who have contributed to IUPUI programs through gifts and voluntary services are honored. In honoring them, we are reminded how important philanthropy and volunteerism are to our university, community and to our civic lives in general.

Honored by the School of Physical Education were Raymond A. Dault, and Victoria L. Memmel.

Professor Emeritus Dault is a donor who has instilled in others a belief in the value of giving to support students.

Mrs. Victoria Memmel has been a long-time of the school through a scholarship in memory of her late husband, Rudolph. In the near future, the Memmel Patio will be constructed at Camp Brosius thanks to her gracious support.

Dr. Linda Brothers and Dr. Katie Stanton Honored

In April, Dr. Linda Brothers, Associate Professor and Chair of the Tourism, Conventions and Event Management Department and Dr. Katie Stanton, Assistant Professor of Physical Education were among the 30 women honored by the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Commission on Women for helping to make IUPUI a good place for everyone.
