Have you ever planned a vacation and looked
to the Internet to find out information about possible places
to go? Have you ever considered Indiana tourist attractions
as your vacation destination? If you have, or if you’re
curious about the tourism industry in the Hoosier State, you
have to investigate Indiana at Visitlndiana.net.
The author of this site, RHIT undergraduate,
Joe Lee, has created a site with information about Indiana
arts and entertainment, famous Hoosiers, accommodations, festivals,
museums, outdoor recreation, restaurants and much more! This
website highlights that Indiana is fun to visit and ready
to accommodate the many visitors that come here each year.
Joe inaugurated this website in March of 1998 using the IUPUI
school server as a place to host Indiana Tourism Online, but
soon outgrew the confines of that server and has since moved
it to its current home of http://www.visitindiana.net.Visitors
from 57 different countries and from all over the United States
have entered therein, and over the past year those visitors
have generated more than 29,000 hits to the website. This
is an impressive accomplishment for such a young site, but
Joe hopes to far outpace that in the coming year with a goal
of 90,000 visitors for 1999.
Joe is responsible for all aspects of the
site design and upkeep. He answers information requests, updates
pages, registers the site with search engines, and keeps up
with new tourism information in order to keep the site timely.
Joe’s number one goal for the website is to promote
Indiana tourism, thus proving to the many visitors from home
and abroad that this is an exciting place to visit and worthy
of international status in the global tourism market.
This site is an excellent example also of RHIT education in
action. Joe engaged the help of other IUPUI students and staff
when he first created this site Kari Lee, Tor Ame Myhre and
Amy Rosenberg. Currently the RHIT department, along with Indiana
DNR and the State Festivals Association sponsor Visitindiana.net.
Take a moment and view Visitlndiana.net.
It is exciting to be part of the RHIT programs, and this example
of student initiative is a superb way to illustrate how valuable
our education experience can be.
Rudolph L. Memmel Scholarship
Established
By: Michele Thomas
The School of Physical Education salutes
Mrs. Vickie L. Memmel. She and her late husband, Rudie L.
Memmel, established The Rudolph L. Memmel Scholarship. The
Scholarship will benefit a physical education major in the
School of Physical Education who has a financial need, yet
has persevered to overcome that need through employment. On
March 7, the School dedicated a memorial bas-relief plaque,
donated by Mrs. Memmel, to commemorate Mr. Memmel’s
commitment to the school and honor scholarship recipients
for generations to come. The Memmel’s also established
a gift to benefit Camp Brosius.
Mrs. Memmel is a native of Dayton, OH, and
a graduate of Miami University with a BS degree in Education;
she recently celebrated her 55th class reunion. She holds
a -master’s degree in personnel from the University
of Cincinnati. As a resident of Cincinnati, she gives generously
of her time to her church, Altrusa club, Retired Senior Volunteer
Program (RSVP), and Aronoff Arts Center. Mrs. Memmel is an
Ohio Senior Olympian and commits several hours a day to physical
fitness.
The late Rudolph (“Rudie”) L.
Memmel demonstrated a unique commitment to physical education
through the following: service as Supervisor for Cincinnati
Public Schools’ health and physical education curriculum
(1951 -1975); commitment to the Normal College and Indiana
University School of Physical Education as a faithful supporter
of alumni activities and president of the School’s Alumni
Board, leadership as national president of Phi Epsilon Kappa
Fraternity, love and support of Senior Olympics, and national
leadership in physical education.
The School thanks Mrs. Memmel for her continued
support.
February has been designated as Campus Campaign

IUPUI
Moving Company Performances
By: Mary Maitland Kimball
The Moving Company of IUPUI is celebrating
its sixteenth season, and Artistic Director, Mary Maitland
Kimball, invites you to participate by attending one or more
of the spring events. On Saturday evening March 27, Drs. William
and Marian DeMyers have generously donated the Starlite Ballroom
on Guion Road for a benefit dance for the Moving Company.
Student donations will be $5.00 and all others will be $9.00
(or more if the individual wishes to make a larger contribution).
Participants are invited to dance on the beautiful ballroom
dance floor, and Moving Company dancers will provide a floorshow
at the break in the ballroom dancing. All are welcome, and
last year some dancers from Illinois drove in for the benefit.
IUPUI’s Moving Company
Presents Dance Millennium
On Sunday afternoon, April 18 at 2:00 p.m.
at the Madame Walker Theatre the Moving Company will present
for its annual spring concert. The program will include choreography
by both students and professionals in a variety of dance forms
including modern, jazz, tap, ballet, and Irish step dance.
The program is free for IUPUI students, faculty, staff, and
the community with the hope that generous contributions to
the Moving Company’s account with the IU Foundation
might help ensure that the dance program at IUPUI continues
and thrives in the new millennium. For additional information
please contact Mary Maitland Kimball at 274-0611 or by e-mail
at mkimball@iupui.edu.
You are invited to spend a pleasant afternoon
at Dance Millennium and also attend the sixth annual Stergiopoulos
Scholarship Fundraiser at The Greek Islands Restaurant, 906
S. Meridian Street. Dinner tickets for the all you can eat
meal are $30.00 per person and may be purchased by contacting
Pat May at 274-2599. Both activities support the students
in the School of Physical Education.
