A Family Affair
At the Greek Island
Restaurant, you are likely to see the entire Stergiopoulos
family working. Elias, and his son, George can be seen greeting
customers like old friends, while Fofo and her daughter, Angela
are busy in the kitchen. Perhaps your waitress will be Penny,
also a daughter of Elias and Fofo Stergiopoulos. This sense
of family and community is a large part of the motivation
for Elias and Fofo to sponsor an annual fund raising event
to provide scholarships for students involved in the RHIT
Department at IUPUI.
The Stergiopoulos family
feels that emphasis should be placed on education within the
service industry. Most every business, organization, or individual
rely heavily on the restaurant, hotel, institutional, and
travel industries. The family feels that many times, in an
academic setting, the service industry programs are not given
the same prestige as other departments.
Consequently, less money is available for
scholarship. The annual fundraiser at The Greek Island Restaurant
provides some remedy to that financial inequity as far as
the Stergiopoulos family is concerned. The fundraiser also
gives the family an opportunity to repay a community that
they feel has been good to them. To provide additional proof
in their belief in the RuT Dept. at IIJPUI, their daughter,
Angela graduated from there in August, 1996 with a degree
in Hospitality Management. Elias and Fofo immigrated from
Greece to the US. They settled in Indianapolis nineteen years
ago. They felt Indianapolis was a good community and the right
place to raise their children. They have been in the restaurant
business for most of those years. They pride themselves in
their establishment being a place where people come to a friendly
atmosphere and enjoy a good meal.
On Sunday, April 6, 1997, the 4th annual
fund raiser for the Elias and Fofo Stergiopoulos Scholarship
Fund will be held. Seating will be available from 1-6:00pm
at The Greek Island Restaurant located at 906 South Meridian
Street in Indianapolis.
The cost is $30.00 per person and checks are
to be made payable to the IIJ Foundation Account #37-P013-06-5.
Reservations or additional information can be obtained from
Pat May, RHIT Dept. @ 274-2599 or e-mail: pmay@hyrax.iupui.edu.
Attendance guarantees the opportunity to help provide funding
for RHIT student scholars, a genial atmosphere, and a delicious
meal prepared by a 100% family operation.
