The Purdue University Board of Trustees
voted to award an associate degree on behalf of an Indianapolis
student killed last summer in an auto accident.
Michael Barrett Adcock
was pursuing the Associate Degree in Food Service and Lodging
Supervision at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis
prior to his death last June 29. He was in his sophomore year.
“The graduation requirements were
met by applying some advanced courses he had previously completed
to the associate degree option”, says Linda Brothers,

and Tourism Management at IUPUI.
“Michael was very ambitious, he worked
full-time and went to school,” notes Brothers. “He

RHIT
Student Organizations
By Jim Bennett
Now that the hectic pace
of registration and schedule adjustments is over, it may be
time for students to focus on some extra-curricular activities!
The RHIT Department sponsors two student groups: the Restaurant
and Hotel Society (RHS), and the Travel and Tourism Society
(TNT).
RHS has been in existence since 1982. Headed
by Dr. Linda Brothers, the purpose of RHS is to expose it’s
members to career opportunities within the foodservice and
lodging industries while promoting a spirit of comraderie
within the department RHS is involved with a variety of activities
such as “Super Snack” luncheons, fundraisers,
and excursions to places of interest. This fall the club is
planning a hayride and trip to Metamora to participate in
their annual “Christmas Walk”. The highlight of
the year takes place in May with the annual trip to Chicago’s
McCormick Place for the NRA food show. Dues are $6 for the
semester or $10 for the year.
TNT is a new student organization started
this past August by Sotiris Avgoustis. Its purpose is to make
students aware of career opportunities within travel and tourism
as well as the economic impact the industry has on our economy.
The club has already sponsored a car wash fundraiser and plans
several other activities for the year, which include a visit
to Indianapolis International Airport, participating in the
Campus Quest Scavenger Hunt in October, a trip to Chicago
in November, and a trip to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans in
February! Dues are $10 for the year.
It is not necessary to be a RHIT major to
join these two organizations. It is a great way to meet people
and to become involved in the hospitality industry. Please
see any RHIT faculty member to express your interest or call
Pat May at 274-2599.

Travel
and Tourism Society - a new beginning
By Kelly McNeely
Fall semester 1995 introduced
a new society for ITJPUT undergraduates, graduates, and faculty
The society’s membership is open to students and faculty
in all schools and majors. The Travel and Tourism Society’s
goal is to inform and educate about the travel industry
Thus far, the society has fifteen members
and hopes it will increase throughout the semester. A registration
fee of $10 for the year opens all activities to members for
participation. These activities include trips, tours, and
fundraisers. During October, the society will welcome its
first guest speaker, Lisa Dirkse. Lisa is the Director of
Marketing and Project Coordinator at the Indiana State Tourism
Division. In November, the society will take a tour of the
Indianapolis International Airport and members may go on a
trip to Chicago. For February 1996, the society is planning
a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Students interested
in these activities are invited to join the society.

Tourism Society is:

The Restaurant
Hotel Society Welcomes You
By Carrie Wright
The Restaurant Hotel Society
(RHS) is a student organization designed to help students
explore different types of restaurants and hotels throughout
the hospitality industry. Last year RHS participated in many
fun-filled activities to accomplish this goal, RHS toured
French Lick Resort, the Frederick Talbott Inn by Conner Praire,
and went on monthly dinner parties. RHS members also enjoyed
the Indianapolis Symphony Christmas Concert, a Spring Break
trip to Las Vegas, and the annual Chicago Food Show!
In order to raise money for these trips,
we catered a Nelson Mandella Library Exhibit Function, sold
lunches at Thanksgiving and Spring Super Snaks, and judged
a Dow Brands Recipe Contest.
This year promises to be the most exciting
year yet for RHS members! This fall we are looking into a
fall hayride and a Christmas train trip to Metamorra for the
day. For spring semester, we are going to be attending the
annual Chicago Food Show and take a Spring Break Trip! We
also plan to have monthly restaurant outings all year.
In order to defray the cost of these trips
for students, RI-IS will have a Thanksgiving SuperSnak, a
Spring SuperSnak, and a few other fundraising activities.
If you are interested in learning more about
RHS, please contact Came Wright, Christian Celis-Schemidt,
Kari Bonwell, or Toby Slunaker.
