Welcome
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the State of Indiana and the two universities that made the
I-Light network possible, we welcome you to the I-Light Applications Workshop
2002. This event provides an occasion for us to explore opportunities
for collaboration, research, and scholarship using the I-Light Optical
Fiber Infrastructure. I-Light is a unique, high-speed network connecting
Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis,
and Purdue University with each other and with Abilene, the national high-speed
Internet2 research and education network.
The workshop will feature demonstrations and presentations by researchers
and information technologists from our campuses concerning some of the
advances in IT and science already made possible by I-Light. Information
will also be shared regarding the use of the I-Light network for applications
in advanced computing, visualization, and collaboration. This workshop
will provide interesting, important, and timely information about ways
that the I-Light networking environment can enrich research programs in
a wide variety of disciplines
We are particularly honored to have Larry Smarr as keynote speaker at
this applications workshop.
Larry Smarr was the founding Director of the National Center for Supercomputing
Applications (NCSA), Director of the National Computational Science Alliance,
and is the founding Institute Director of the California Institute for
Telecommunications and Information Technology.
We look forward to a productive and educational time together.
Yours sincerely,
James Bottum
Vice President for Information Technology and CIO

About the Workshop
Purposes of the I-Light Applications Workshop:
- To disseminate information about and prompt interest in use of the
capabilities of the I-Light network for advanced computing, visualization,
and collaboration applications
- To enhance collaboration among the researchers of the three main campuses
of Indiana and Purdue Universities
- To demonstrate some of the advances in information technology and
science already made possible by I-light
