About I-Light
I-Light is the State of Indiana's optical fiber network for higher
education. Initially connecting Indiana University
Bloomington, Purdue University in West Lafayette, and
Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, I-light
is being extended through the I-Light2 initiative to connect every
college and university in the entire State. Once this is complete, the
State of Indiana will become the first state in the nation with such an
extensively networked system of higher education. I-Light connects
universities and colleges in the State of Indiana to the national
network infrastructure, including the commodity internet, the Internet2
Abilene research network, and the National Lambda Rail research network.

The I-light network has become the foundation for the State's advanced
cyberinfrastructure and for economic development in the State.
Cyberinfrastructure is made up of high performance computers, massive
data storage systems, data resources, visualization facilities,
advanced instruments, sensor networks, and people -- all linked together by advanced software and high performance networks to improve research productivity
and enable newbreakthroughs not in other ways possible. Millions of dollars come into the State of Indiana each year to fund efforts involving universities
and colleges in the State that are helping lead the creation of a
national cyberinfrastructure to enhance US competitiveness.
I-light was initiated in 1999 with a $5.3M state appropriation by the
Indiana General Assembly. Then Governor Frank O'Bannon launched the I-
Light network on December 11, 2001. On November 1, 2005, Governor Mitch
Daniels announced funding to expand I-Light to the state's colleges and
universities to support their research and education programs.
I-Light Events
Since 2001, I-Light has come to represent the broad range of advanced IT research and education collaborations among Indiana's leading higher-education institutions.
I-Light Symposium
The I-Light Symposium provides an occasion for researchers, educators, and artists from across the State of Indiana to explore opportunities for collaboration, research, and scholarship using the I-Light Optical Fiber Infrastructure.
IU, Purdue, & Notre Dame at the Supercomputing Conference
The Supercomputing conference series, sponsored annually by the IEEE and ACM, is the most important conference worldwide in the areas of high performance computing and networking. Since 2000,Indiana and Purdue universities have led coordinated displays at the Supercomputing
Conference, and as a result, have greatly enhanced our State's reputation in advanced computing.
