Strategies that Recognize the Limitations of the Learning System (Svinicki, 1999)

• When lecturing, provide breaks in the delivery of information. Usually, learners cannot process a continuous stream of new information without breaks.
• Pause after giving a very important piece of information, to give learners processing time.
• Repeat or rephrase a point just made.
• Give examples of points that are made.
• Have learners focus on one task at a time. When attention is divided, working memory capacity is also divided resulting in less capacity available for each task.

Think about how you present information to your class. Do you provide students with processing time? Do you deliberately repeat information? Do you provide sufficient numbers of examples? Do you avoid overloading them?
