IU Online Conference

The fourth annual statewide IU Online Conference will be held October 30, 2019, at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel at Keystone Crossing.

Your conference hosts from the Office of Online Education, the Office of Collaborative Academic Programs, and eLearning Design and Services are seeking proposals from IU faculty, administrators, advisors, success coaches, and staff across the state who are innovators and collaborators in the online space.

We will consider proposals that address empirical research, showcase best practices, and/or describe lessons learned related to one or more of the following areas:

  • Program development and administration
  • Coaching, advising, student engagement, and co-curricular programming
  • Marketing, admissions, and recruitment
  • Teaching and learning innovation
  • Technology that advances digital learning

Of special interest are presentations describing intercampus and/or interdisciplinary collaborations and proposals that have application to multiple disciplines. Sessions will last for 30 to 45 minutes.

Building A Prison to School Pipeline in Indiana

The notion that there is a school-to-prison pipeline has become part of our commonplace understanding of the social causes of mass incarceration. Far less attention, however, has been given to the consequences of removing access to education from prisons, a movement that has accelerated since the passage of the 1994 Violent Crime Control Act, despite the fact that multiple studies have demonstrated the value of education for reducing rates of recidivism. There has been even less public dialogue about the barriers that formerly incarcerated individuals face when they do try to pursue opportunities for education and training on the outside.

At this two-day conference, participants will hear from formerly incarcerated individuals about their struggles to attain educational opportunities, both behind the walls and after release. Attendees will also participate in action sessions, intended to help develop strategies to support reinstating educational opportunities “behind the walls” and to facilitate better access to higher education “on the outside”.

Peer-Led Team Learning International Society: 8th Annual Conference

Hosted by the Stem Education Innovation and Research Institute at IUPUI; this event will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 6-8 of 2019.

The title of this event will be ” Weaving Together Best Practices,” and they’re looking for presentations, workshops and posters! The deadline to submit in order to receive feedback is Friday, February 15, 2019. Submit here!

There are many threads of the program to be explored such as sustainability of PLTL campus programs, critical thinking, meta-cognition, and PLTL – discourse analysis including cyberPLTL, PLTL and the sense of belonging, workplace skills development and PLTL, and implementations in non-STEM disciplines.

IAHI Conference yields “An Anthropocene Primer”

The IUPUI Arts & Humanities Institute and the Rivers of the Anthropocene project is proud to announce the official launch of An Anthropocene Primer, Version 1.0 on October 23, 2017. An Anthropocene Primer is an innovative open access, open peer review publication that guides learners through the complex concepts and debates related to the Anthropocene, including climate change, pollution, and environmental justice.

This born-digital publication (www.anthropoceneprimer.org) is a critical and timely resource for learners across multiple fields from academia, to industry, to philanthropy to learn about issues and topics relating to the Anthropocene, a framework for understanding environmental change that highlights human impact on earth systems.

An Anthropocene Primer was created to provide learners in museums, schools, non-profits, and formal research institutions with an entry point into some of the big concepts and debates that dominate discussions about the Anthropocene. The primer is not intended to be comprehensive (this is, after all, An Anthropocene Primer, not The Anthropocene Primer), nor is it intended to be didactic. The primer is a framework to guide individual and collaborative learning from the beginner to advanced levels.

Version 1.0 of An Anthropocene Primer is available for open peer review from October 23, 2017 through February 1, 2018. Open peer review allows users to contribute to and engage with fellow readers and the authors as the editors develop it for a final print and open access ebook version. Herron School of Art and Design presents pop artist and surrealist Wayne White

Wayne WhiteKnown for his humor and distinct aesthetic, pop artist and surrealist Wayne White will be the keynote speaker at the Foundations in Art: Theory and Education’s national biennial conference, hosted in Indianapolis.

As sponsor of the biennial conference, Herron School of Art and Design is hosting the keynote address at 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, in Room 450 of the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Campus Center, 420 University Blvd.

White is a three-time Emmy Award winner for his set design and puppeteering work on “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” He has also directed numerous music videos for various artists including Peter Gabriel and Smashing Pumpkins. The artist’s works are held in prominent permanent collections including New York’s New Museum of Contemporary Art and the Detroit Institute of Art.

The Foundations in Art: Theory and Education conference runs March 25 to 28. The conference theme, ‘Tectonic Shifts: Breaking New Ground,’ reflects plans to examine how the forces of change are shaping the foundation landscape. Organizers see the conference as a continuum of the conversation during the 2013 event, which attracted more than 500 artists, designers, historians and educators.

Foundations in Art: Theory and Education is a national association dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the development and teaching of college-level foundation courses in both studio and art history. Its members represent independent colleges of art and design, university art departments, and community colleges throughout the United States.

White’s lecture is free and open to the public.

Following the lecture, a reception will take place in Eskenazi Hall, 735 W. New York St.

Overseas Conference Fund Grant Applications Available Now

imagesIndiana University, through the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs (OVPIA), administers several internal grant awards each year and also advises IU faculty members on other selected external grants.

Overseas conference grants provide support for faculty to participate in an international conference. Open to all IU faculty, for travel expenses for participation in an international conference. The faculty member must be presenting a paper, participating in a poster session, be a panel member, or giving a keynote speech. Applicants must be full-time academic appointees at an IU campus. Applications must have matching commitment with IU institutional funds, e.g., from department, school, or campus. Conferences held in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Mexico are excluded. The maximum award is $1,500.

Requests must predate the conference or symposium by at least one month. The Office of Academic Affairs will review submissions and make awards. Successful applicants will acknowledge IUPUI support in all publicity and in any publications resulting from the conference or symposium.

Brief proposals (not exceeding two pages) should be submitted with the completed application form, and should include:

  • topic, objectives, and description of the conference or symposium
  • venue
  • summary (up to one paragraph) of the background of each prospective and/or confirmed speaker or key participant
  • expected outcomes of the conference (impacts across the IUPUI campus, press releases, proceedings, publications)

NEH “Shared Horizons: Data, Biomedicine, and the Digital Humanities” Symposium Scheduled for April 10-12

August 10, 2012 – The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) recently announced the first initiative of its partnership with the National Library of Medicine (NLM).  NEH’s Office of Digital Humanities, working in cooperation with NLM, the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities of the University of Maryland, and Research Councils UK, will be a part of “Shared Horizons: Data, Biomedicine, and the Digital Humanities,” an interdisciplinary symposium exploring the intersection of digital humanities and biomedicine.

Scheduled to take place April 10-12, 2013, Shared Horizons will provide a unique forum for  participants and their institutions to address questions about collaboration, research methodologies, and the interpretation of evidence arising from the interdisciplinary opportunities in this area of biomedical-driven humanities scholarship.

Shared Horizons aims to create opportunities for disciplinary cross-fertilization through a mix of formal and informal presentations combined with breakout sessions, all designed to promote a rich exchange of ideas about how large-scale quantitative methods can lead to new understandings of human culture. Bringing together researchers from the digital humanities and bioinformatics communities, the symposium will explore ways in which these two communities might collaborate on projects that bridge the humanities and medicine around the topics of sequence alignment and network analysis, two modes of analysis that intersect with “big data.”
