IUPUI is a three-peat winner: Campus receives award for exemplary diversity initiatives

283091_w296INDIANAPOLIS — For the third year in a row, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis was selected to receive the 2014 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

As a recipient of this national award that honors U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, IUPUI will be prominently featured in the magazine’s November 2014 issue.

“We are pleased to be recognized for all of the energy that has been built into distinct cultures, which has created and instilled diversity into our institution’s consciousness through practices and programs designed for all members of the IUPUI community,” said Karen Dace, IUPUI’s vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion. “While we know there is still much work still ahead of us, we have opened more doors of opportunity for our students, faculty, staff and community partners.”

Insight Into Diversity also recognized IUPUI for its ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on campus including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities and members of the LGBT community. IUPUI was commended for making strides in the enrollment and graduation of minority students and for putting in place some distinctive diversity initiatives and inclusion programs. Highlights of the recognition include:

Diversity Enrichment and Achievement Program: Assists students of color in pursuing and obtaining their college degrees through an intensive retention program that addresses personal, academic and social experiences that have an impact on student success.

  • Office for Veterans and Military Personnel: Provides comprehensive resources to veterans and Veterans Affairs benefit recipients to aid in their overall success as IUPUI students.
  • Diversity Plans: Outlines goals for improving the climate for diversity in each school and administrative unit across campus.
  • Faculty and Staff Councils: Facilitates interaction, addresses issues and motivates, encourages and promotes the professional development of IUPUI faculty and staff. The Faculty and Staff Councils include Asian American and Pacific Islander; Black; Latino; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender; and Native American.
  • Faculty and Staff Diversity Awards: Recognizes faculty and staff who promote a campus climate where diversity is valued, energizes the appreciation of world cultures or champions for social justice.

“We hope the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award serves as a way to honor those institutions of higher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine.

Other awards

IUPUI was recently ranked as one of the nation’s top universities, as well as ranked No. 7 “Up and Coming” school and “Best College for Veterans” by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015 edition of Best Colleges. The campus was also recognized for its learning communities and first-year experience for the 13th consecutive year by U.S. News, which highlighted IUPUI for offering programs that help ensure a positive collegiate experience for new freshmen and undergraduates.

For the second year in a row, Minority Access Inc. — a national nonprofit educational organization dedicated to improving diversity in education, employment and research — has recognized IUPUI for its commitment to diversity as a result of the programs and activities it has on campus that both enhance and promote an environment of inclusion.

Additionally, IUPUI was named among the 30 best non-Historically Black Colleges and Universities for minorities in the United States by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, a critical source of news, information and commentary on the full range of issues concerning diversity in American higher education.

Curtis awarded for NEH Summer Seminar about Muslim American Identity

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in Washington, D.C, has announced that Edward Curtis, Millennium Chair of the Liberal Arts and professor of religious studies, has been awarded $114,438 to conduct a national seminar for school teachers on “Muslim American Identities, Past and Present.”

The three-week seminar, which will take place on the IUPUI campus in the summer of 2015, will give sixteen school teachers from around the country the opportunity to explore the history and diverse cultures of Muslims in the United States.

Participants will study thirty primary source documents, hear from two visiting experts, make field trips to two local mosques, and use the resources of the IUPUI University Library to complete individual research projects.

“My primary goal,” said Curtis, “is to nurture an environment of deep intellectual engagement and active learning in which school teachers can answer a key question of our historical moment: what does it mean to be both Muslim and American?”

In order to answer that question, Curtis will emphasize the impact of gender, race, ethnicity, and religious interpretation in the making of Muslim American identities.

The Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture, which has offered numerous seminars and professional development opportunities for young scholars and school teachers, will support the logistical aspects of the program.

Funding for NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes is provided by the federal government, and grants are awarded through a rigorous and selective process of peer review.

“Understanding the rich diversity of Muslim American identities in a balanced and informed manner,” Curtis concluded, “can be a powerful means of bridging cultures inside the United States and beyond.”

 


Call for nominations: 2013 Dr. Joseph T. Taylor Award for Excellence in Diversity

In honor of Dr. Joseph T. Taylor, the first dean of the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, this is a call for nominations and applications for the 14th annual IUPUI Excellence in Diversity Awards. The awards will be conferred by Chancellor Charles R. Bantz during the 25th Annual Joseph T. Taylor Symposium on February 25, 2014. Award recipient(s) will be selected from nominations or applications submitted by faculty, staff or students in recognition of exemplary IUPUI individuals, academic and support programs, events, policies and activities that have led to one or more of the following:

  • Institutional Leadership and Commitment – Clarity of expectations, resource investment, and accountability at all levels of leadership.
  • Curricular and Co-Curricular Transformation – Incorporation of principles of multiculturalism, pluralism, equity and diversity into the curriculum and co-curriculum.
  • Campus Climate – The degree to which the events, messages, symbols, values of the campus make it a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Representational Diversity – The degree to which the campus attracts, retains, and develops students, faculty, and staff of color.
  • IUPUI Community in issues related to race, class, or gender through innovative curriculum, research, programs or events.

Karen Dace to be appointed IUPUI vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor and IU Executive Vice President Charles R. Bantz has announced Karen Dace as IUPUI’s next vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion effective Sept. 3, pending approval by the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

Dace, who most recently served as deputy chancellor in the Division of Diversity, Access and Equity at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, was selected after an extensive national search, chaired by IU School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Dean Augustine Agho. Dace fills the role currently held in an interim capacity by Zebulun Davenport, vice chancellor for student life.

As vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion, Dace will serve as the campus’ senior diversity officer and oversee the Multicultural Success Center and Adaptive Educational Services. Additionally, Dace will facilitate the institutionalization of structures that advance equity and diversity within IUPUI units and initiate change in the cultures and climate of IUPUI.
“Having a senior-level administrator focused at the campus level on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion has already produced gains for IUPUI in recent years,” Bantz said. “Professor Dace has 14 years’ experience as a chief diversity officer at two public universities, published research on diversity-related topics and demonstrated an exceptional ability to build relationships across constituencies. She is a thoughtful, experienced and dedicated leader whose definition of diversity is as broad as it is inclusive — just what a campus as large as IUPUI needs to advance our diversity goals.”

In addition to her role as deputy chancellor at UMKC, Dace is also an associate professor in the Department of Communications. She was recently asked by colleagues in the School of Education to teach a class titled “Race and Diversity in Higher Education.” While at UMKC, Dace has received nearly $1.7 million in grants to enhance a supportive environment for diversity.

Dace is the District 5 regional director for the Commission on Access, Diversity and Excellence with the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, and she has authored or co-authored 12 publications since 1987. Before her work at UMKC, Dace was the associate vice president for diversity at the University of Utah.

“I am excited about the opportunity to become part of the IUPUI effort to enhance diversity through collaborations on and off campus,” Dace said. “My meetings with IUPUI leadership, students, faculty and staff; the diversity, equity and inclusion professionals already in place; and members of the surrounding community demonstrated a great commitment and vision for this initiative, and I look forward to working with everyone as we, together, strive to make IUPUI a leader in diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Dace received her Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and her Master of Arts in mass communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and her Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Iowa.
