Instructions for Summary of Reading Assignments

You are required to write short (2 page) summaries of some required reading assignments for this course. These are the articles, selections from chapters, web documents, etc., other than the Porter text, as indicated on the syllabus. There is a limited choice for a given week's assignment.

The following are suggestions about what should be included in a summary. Since the nature of the readings are so different, the relevance of each item will vary. The summaries are assigned early to make sure you are on the right track.

Author and background

Indicate the author and give any information you might have relevant for understanding the reading.
When and where did the reading appear? For whom (what audience) was it writen?

The document

What kind of document is it, e.g., scholarly article, eyewitness account, lecture, etc.?
Summarize what the reading covers.
What are the author's source(s) of information?
What are the conclusions?

Relevance

Give a brief statement about the importance of the reading.
What does it contribute to the course, i.e. our understanding of the history of medicine?
Why was it assigned?
