Napoleon: liberal heir to the revolution or imperial despot?

There are great differences of opinion among historians about many of the people and events in France's past. This assignment will give you an opportunity to look at one of these debates and argue the case for one side or the other.

The subject of this paper (3-5 pages) is Napoleon Bonaparte. Whether considered the most famous or infamous Frenchman, Napoleon has been the subject of more writing than any other inhabitant of the "hexagon." Most of these readings take their title from a book by David Dowd which contains selections of primary documents from the time of Napoleon.

Although you should spend most of your time in making the case that Napoleon was heir to the French Revolution or an imperial despot, be sure to point out some of the weaknesses of the opposing side. You will not require any additional material to do this assignment, although you should read the chapter in the Popkin text for background on Napoleon, pp. 66-77.

If quoting from or citing one of the readings, give the author and/or title in a footnote or a parenthesis in the text of the paper. You may use an abbreviated version of the author/title if citing it again. Examples

"The Civil Code of 1804,", p. 43

"Note of Napoleon on a Teaching Corps," p. 52

Napoleon's Account of the Internal Situation of France in 1804

Civil Code, p. 44.
