GRADUATE STUDIES - PUBLIC HISTORY
IUPUI PUBLIC HISTORY PROGRAM

The Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis Public History Program offers students broad preparation for practicing the historian's craft outside of a college or university setting. The public history curriculum is designed to (1) train students in the research, analytical, and communications skills that are common to all historians, (2) provide them with a combination of classroom instruction and practical experience in applying the historian's skills in the public arena, (3) inform them of career options in public history, and (4) make them aware of the professional and ethical dimensions of public history.
Public History students are trained in traditional historical skills (research, analysis, communication) but with an emphasis on delivering historical scholarship to diverse audiences. Graduate work in public history prepares students for careers in museums, historical societies, archives and libraries, historic preservation organizations, government agencies, corporations, law firms, and historical consulting firms. Training in public history can also be useful for students who want to do public programming or teach history at the primary or secondary levels.
