GPRA Study at IUPUI
Thank you very much for your interest in our GPRA alcohol research study! This website is available to give you basic information about our study and to provide you with a link to consent if you qualify to continue to the second step of the screening process.
GPRA is a study which asks whether the presence of a particular form of genetic material, GABRA2, is related to the way the human brain responds to alcohol administration, and how that relationship changes when factors known to increase the risk for future
alcoholism are included. Such factors include a subject's family history of alcoholism, personal recent drinking history, the age at which regular drinking began, and tendency towards impulsive behavior. We will maintain contact with all subjects who qualify
for the laboratory testing phase of this study for several years in order to learn which individuals develop an alcohol use disorder and to determine if the data we obtain now can predict later outcomes.
Not everyone that is interested in this study will qualify for enrollment. The GPRA study requires 2 phone screens and a face-to-face interview before we can decide if you qualify to participate. You will be paid for the face-to-face interview, but
not for the phone screens. It will take a week after the completion of the face-to-face interview before we will be able to review all of your data to determine whether you will qualify for the study; however, you will be paid in cash at the end of your interview
in either case. If you qualify and choose to enroll, you will be scheduled for two separate, day-long visits to the laboratory. Each visit starts at 7am and usually ends around 5pm. Testing days are typically available Monday through Friday with occasional Saturday availability.
During your visits you will be infused intravenously (IV administration) with either salt water or a mixture of salt water and alcohol and we will
conduct tests to see how your brain responds to the infusion. All visits and follow up sessions must be completed to receive the full payment of $350. Parking and meals are provided during visits to our lab at the Indiana University Hospital.
If you are interested, please call 317-948-6551 or email erptest@iupui.edu and leave your name, number, and the best time for us to reach you. A
recruiter will call you back to complete the first pre-screen with you over the phone. If you are currently enrolled
in the study and need to reach the research staff, please call 317-948-6550.
If you have already completed the first phone screen and are here to consent to the SECOND phone screen please click the link to the left. To complete this consent you will need to know the unique password you were given during the first phone screen. If you do not have this or do not remember please
contact the lab staff at 317-948-6550 or by email at erptest@iupui.edu.
