Objectives
This section will help you to:
- know Indiana’s waste disposal situation (answer questions in reading list regarding the IDEM report on Solid Waste in Indiana);
- describe the waste disposal methods for Indiana and discuss the locations and expected life of municipal landfills in Indiana;
- identify sources of waste by humans including solid wastes and wastewater;
- explain how waste is collected, and how specific wastes are managed at different types of landfills;
- know the general history of waste disposal in the U.S. and Indiana (Why did we change to an Integrated Waste Management approach?);
- define NIMBYism and understand its significance;
- identify important processes related to sanitary landfills and trash incinerators;
- describe the positive and negative aspects of different waste management methods;
- state the impact sewage and waste disposal have on the environment, pollution, and on resource reuse (i.e., combined sewers);
- explain how a wastewater treatment plant functions and list items wastewater treatment plants cannot treat;
- describe the proper installation and function of a septic tank system;
- describe recycling efforts in Indiana and identify methods by which you can reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
