Objectives
This section will help you to:
- define natural resource, mineral resource, and reserve;
- understand the relationship between geologic processes and the locations we commonly find mineral resources;
- describe the general environmental and human impact of mineral development, extractions, and use;
- understand the current and historical (which continue on today) problems with mining laws/policy;
- understand the economic and environmental role of recycling mineral resources;
- explain the relationship between sustainability and mineral use using key examples from the module and text;
- indicate the key mineral resources of Indiana and how they were formed and are currently mined;
- describe quarrying in Indiana, recognize the mineral resources extracted from quarries in Indiana, discuss the geologic formation of these resources; and
- understand where coal resources are located, what geologic processes form them, how a coal mine functions, and its benefits and drawbacks.
