Readings and Articles

For this module, please read the following in your text:

  • Chapter 13 (5th edition) or Chapter 12 (4th edition) on Water Resources: The lecture will cover relationships between Indiana and the content of Chapter 12. Additionally, focus on the following:
    • the case study on the Edwards Aquifer and wetlands;
    • the factors affecting runoff; and
    • the interactions between surface water and groundwater (Karst Topography).
  • Section 18.2 (5th edition, pp 623-624) or Section 19.3 (4th edition, pp 608-611): Earth’s Atmosphere and Climate Change.

  • Read The Antarctic Sun, the only newspaper bringing you the latest breaking glacial news! This weekly newspaper is published in Antarctica for researchers and scientists at U.S. bases. During the Antarctic summer (which coincides with winter in the United States), several thousand researchers and support staff work in Antarctica.

  • Visit the Chain of Lakes State Park in Albion, Indiana. Located in northeastern Indiana, this park features many features deposited by glaciers. The lakes formed in holes left behind by large blocks of ice that melted as glaciers left Indiana.
  • Visit the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Spencer, Indiana. Located near I-65 south of Indianapolis, Muscatatuck is a wetland restoration project managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The park includes numerous wetlands, several hiking trails, and limited fishing and hunting.
  • Quit your job, say “to heck with Indiana," and move to Antarctica! Raytheon Corporation, a government contractor, is in charge of supporting all government research facilities in Antarctica. Learn more about jobs in Antarctica. They hire everyone from hair stylists to plumbers to engineers for 6 month stints.
