Doing Well in an Online Course (continued)

You’ve set some goals and learned what the characteristics of a successful online student are, so what’s next?  Well, now we have to put that knowledge into practice.  Sounds easy enough, right?question

  1. Be honest with yourself and your learning needs.  Be open to learning, but be ready to ask questions.
  2. Make a schedule and stick to it.  We’re all busy!  Start off the semester right by beginning with good habits.  Most people need to repeat a daily schedule 21 times for it to become a habit.  If you’re not a good habit by week three of this class, it’ll be hard for you to keep up.
    1. In this routine, make it a point to check the class announcements and your messages for our class at least twice a week.  Set a reminder in your calendars on your smart phone or on your computer.
    2. Make a plan to get through one module every two to three days.
    3. Avoid procrastinating or you run the risk of feeling overwhelmed.
    4. Plan to work on the course at least 9 – 12 hours per week.
    5. Click here for a link to IUPUI’s Bebko Learning Center’s tips on creating a weekly schedule.
  3. Communicate, communicate, and communicate.  Remember those three Cs!  Contact your instructor with questions about the material or course structure, post in the Chat Room and open Forums, send messages to your classmates, talk to your classmates that you find in the Lab class or by other means (like the Introductory Assignment).  When you do communicate, remember to use Netiquette so that you represent yourself in the best possible light.  No salutation, no signature line, poor grammar and spelling will make you look sloppy as a student and not do a good job of showing your classmates or your teacher that you are serious or respectful of our professional learning environment.

  2. Sustainability
  3. Earth as a System (Environmental Unity)
  4. Hazardous Earth Processes
  5. Scientific Knowledge

We’ll introduce the first four concepts here, and we’ll cover Scientific Knowledge in great detail in the upcoming Module on the Scientific Method.
