Agenda Item VIII: [INFORMATION
ITEM] Report from the Admissions Committee / Admissions Policies for 2008:
Betty Jones.
Jones
gave an annual report on IUPUI Admission Standards for 2008 (http://www.iupui.edu/~fcouncil/documents/admissions_fall_2008.htm). These standards—which were edited on February
2, 2006 for consistency with the UFC Indiana University Policy and Template and
Guidelines for Campus Admission Policies (approved
January 31, 2006 and posted at http://www.indiana.edu/~ufc/docs/AY06/circulars/U9-2006.htm)—were
approved by the University College (“UC”) Admissions Committee on January 18,
2006. Jones went on to explain that in
2004 the IFC empowered the University College faculty with primary and
initiating responsibility for reviewing and recommending changes in
undergraduate admissions policies and practices.
Ng expressed concern that
allowing certain low high school grades among admitted first-year students
could contribute to the mislabeling of IUPUI as a second class institution.
One member urged the
admission committee to be mindful of students taking the GED to avoid
completing the Core 40 in high school and continue safeguarding against this.
