5:00 pm
Attendance record & original
agenda follow adjournment as attachments.
Agenda Item I: Call to Order: Rosalie Vermette (IUPUI
Faculty Vice-President, 4-0064, rvermett@iupui.edu).
Vermette called the meeting
to order at 3:30pm.
Agenda Item II: Adoption of the Order of Business for the Day.
The order of business for the
day was adopted.
Agenda Item III: [ACTION ITEM] FC 9/7/04 Minutes: Up for Approval.
The minutes of the September
7, 2004 FC meeting were unanimously approved and adopted into record. These

.
Agenda Item IV: [ACTION ITEM] Election of 2005-07At-Large
Representative to the Promotion and Tenure Committee: Kathy Johnson (Nominating
Committee Chair, 4-6764, kjohnso@iupui.edu).
Johnson distributed ballots for the election of one
representative-at-large to the Promotion and Tenure Committee for the 2004-07
term. Having received the greatest
number of votes, B. Keith Moore was elected and will join current at-large
representatives Eleanor Donnelly (through
11/2005) and Carole Gall (through
11/2006).
Johnson thanked and
congratulated all of the candidates then moved that the ballots be
destroyed. The motion carried.
Agenda Item V: Chancellor's Report: Charles Bantz (IUPUI Chancellor
& IU Vice-President).
Agenda Item VI: [UPDATE] The Mission Differentiation Project.
Executive Vice-Chancellor
William Plater briefed the faculty on the Mission Differentiation Project (led by Vice President Charlie Nelms)
which has been initiated in order to ensure that IUPUI has captured the key
elements [in our mission statement] that differentiate the campus and that lay
the foundation for continued development as a campus. IUPUI is seeking
faculty, staff, and student input in order to respond as a single, unified
voice.
A series of information and
feedback sessions were held on campus on September 29th. Following these meetings the response being
drafted on IUPUI’s behalf was revised accordingly and continues to undergo
revision. FC President Bart Ng noted
that the FC Executive Committee, Executive Vice-Chancellor Plater, and others
will continue to solicit and welcome comments or feedback from faculty, staff,
and students. He the noted that (as
Nelms has explained) the Mission Differentiation project has no preconceived
outcome by President Herbert or the Board of Trustees nor is the project
intended to contain or limit IUPUI’s continued growth of IUPUI. It is, Ng believes, a “process of discovery
rather than [one of] dictation.”
Executive Vice-Chancellor Plater reminded the FC that
IUPUI is very well-prepared to respond, having the only Trustee-approved
mission statement of any Indiana University campus.
Agenda Item VII: President's
Report: Bart Ng (IUPUI Faculty President & UFC Co-Secretary, 4-8185, bng@math.iupui.edu)
Ng reported the following:
Agenda Items VIII: Question / Answer Period.
No
discussion.
Agenda Item IX: Unfinished Business?
No
discussion.
Agenda Item X: New Business?
Academic Affairs Chair Jones
announced an upcoming Town Hall Meeting: “Revisiting the IUPUI PUL’s.” The meeting will be held Monday, November 8, from 10:30am to 12:00pm
in the University Library Auditorium.
Representative Rick Ward announced that faculty should
expect to receive a national survey on academic integrity sometime in
October. Ward and the committee on
academic integrity worked over the summer to tailor the survey to suit IUPUI.
Agenda Item XI: Adjournment
of business meeting.
Vermette
adjourned the meeting at 3:58pm at which time Chancellor Charles Bantz began
his ‘State of the Campus’ address.
Agenda Item XII: ‘STATE OF
THE CAMPUS:’ Charles Bantz (IUPUI Chancellor & IU Vice-President).
(The FC Office will notify faculty when a
full transcript of the address is available from the Office of the Chancellor.)
IUPUI’s purpose is to serve the world, starting [here]
in Indianapolis and to continue to pursue its status as the best urban research
university in the world. The Chancellor
acknowledged the bold nature of this goal but also reminded how well a bold
approach has served IUPUI in the past. This
mission—these goals—he pointed out hinges on people. It so followed that the Chancellor’s
presentation centered on the many, varied individuals who make up IUPUI and the
exciting contributions they make in research, scholarship, art, business, the
community as a whole, and beyond.
As President Herbert has explained, charting the
course for Indiana University will rely on Mission Differentiation; enhancing
undergraduate education; recruiting the best and brightest; enhancing
diversity; enhancing research enterprise and infrastructure; and continuing to promote
life sciences as the major contribution to the state of Indiana that they are.
IUPUI has a unique identity that poises it ideally to
achieve much of the above as IUPUI enjoys a great sense of identity: IUPUI is an urban research university (that
happens to also do many other things very well).
IUPUI is a leader—at Indiana University and nationally—
in undergrad education. In fact, Vice-President
Ken Gros Louis has announced that IUPUI’s PUL’s will be play a critical role as
the definition and enhancement of the undergraduate experience is pursued.
The Chancellor noted the areas Life Science, Information
Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Logistics, Arts/Culture/Tourism, and
Philanthropy as just a sampling of the areas in which IUPUI excels.
He then acknowledged Alexander Its’ award-winning work
on the theory of solitary waves using it as a metaphor for IUPUI’s dynamic
nature. “This campus is a wave moving
forward…there is momentum gaining velocity.”
The velocity is what IUPUI must work to continue to enhance (“we have to
help IUPUI grow its momentum”) by retaining our commitment to research/scholarship,
teaching/learning, civic engagement, and diversity.
