The IUPUI Distance Education Committee met On October 21 to review the report of the Task Force on the School of Continuing Studies (SCS). Specific Task Force recommendations and the committee’s preliminary response are as follows”
the SCS be maintained as a
The committee concurs with the Task Force recommendation
2. That the SCS continue to award the Associate and Bachelor degree in General Studies.
The committee concurs with the Task Force recommendation.
3. That the Faculty Council of the SCS be enlarged to include not only the Chair of the General Studies Committee on each campus, but also an additional representative from each campus, along with appropriate administrators of the school.
The committee recommends that this be clarified as follows: That the Faculty Council of the SCS be enlarged to include all faculty with appointments in the SCS, the Chair of the General Studies Committee on each campus, an additional faculty representative from each campus, along with appropriate administrators of the school. The language of the Task Force recommendation does not assure that the majority of the members of the Faculty Council are indeed faculty. [Note: the wording of this recommendation in the Executive Summary is not identical to the recommendation in the body of the Task Force report]
4. That the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, or another officer of the University to whom the Dean of the SCS will report, revive and redefine the purpose of the now dormant “Distributed Education Coordinating Committee,” and use it as an Advisory Council on Extended Studies. Members of the Council will include, but not be limited to, representatives of the most extensive and most promising of the programs through which the University extends learning to students off campus and to students enrolled in non-traditional courses of study.
The committee does not concur with this recommendation and agrees with President Herbert and Vice President Gros-Louis who do not believe that the Distributed Education Coordinating Committee should be revived.
