APPENDIX FPOLICY ON PERSONAL WEB PAGES |
|
Procedures for Publishing on the WWW Existing Policy The applicable umbrella document that is in effect for all of Indiana University is known as "University Computer User's Privileges and Responsibilities" (Fall 1996). The policy for Indiana University covering acceptable use of computing resources as spelled out in this document is sufficiently broad to allow for specific local policies and procedures to respond to changing technology and the use of that technology. The policy states, "Free expression of ideas is central to the academic process. IU computer system administrators will not remove any information from individual accounts unless the appropriate system administrator finds that: The information is inappropriate, because it is unrelated to or is inconsistent with the mission of the University; involves the use of obscene, bigoted, or abusive material on IU resources; or is otherwise not in compliance with the legal and ethical usage responsibilities listed in the "Responsibilities of the User" section." This section clarifies the use of resources and states: "Use of IU computing resources is for purposes related to the University's mission of education, research, and public service. All classes of computer service user may use computing resources only for purposes related to their studies, their instruction, the discharge of their duties as employees, their official business with the University, and their other University-sanctioned activities." |
Indiana University currently supports three ways of publishing information on the WWW: 1. Publishing on systems not centrally maintained or managed by the University's technology organization. These systems may be maintained by a unit or individual. 2. Publishing on centrally maintained hosts, www.indiana.edu, www.iupui.edu, or www.iu.edu. The WWW publishing environment here is intended for institutional (non-personal) publishing. 3. Publishing on other centrally maintained time sharing hosts (e.g. cord.iupui.edu, php.indiana.edu). The WWW publishing environment on these systems has been loosely defined and is intended to be a casual publishing environment primarily addressing personal publishing use. In order to obtain an account, one must be a student, faculty or staff member at IUPUI. Personal Home Pages The domain names php.iupui.edu and php.indiana.edu have been established on the central systems for the purpose of publishing personal home pages. Because these home pages (item 3. above) are often experimental in nature, change frequently, and can cause difficult to manage performance and reliability problems, it is important that they not be coupled with the institutional publishing environment. and a physical level, therefore, provides technical advantages. If a significant amount of stress is placed on the personal home page environment, it will not decrease the reliability of the institutional ("sponsored" account) environment. The other advantage to this separation is clearly to attempt to distinguish the personal home pages and content from information that is published for institutional purposes. Only university, school, department or unit sponsored home pages should be housed on www.iupui.edu, www.indiana.edu, or www.iu.edu. |
