Number to Elect: 1
Term of Office: July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2010
Procedures: The IUPUI Faculty Council Nominating Committee is pleased to present the following nominees for President of the Faculty. Of the candidates listed, you will be asked to vote for one faculty member. Election will take place by paper ballot distributed and tallied at the May 6 meeting.
Simon Atkinson (IR02 Tenured Associate Professor) (Medicine: Nephrology)
IFC Executive Committee Member 2007-2009
UFC 2006-2008
IFC Academic Affairs
IFC Budgetary Affairs
IFC Research Committee 2007-08 (Chair)
Past School of Medicine Faculty President
Candidate’s Statement:
I am Associate Professor of Medicine and of Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology in the Division of Nephrology, School of Medicine. My research
interests are in cellular mechanisms of acute kidney injury. I have served on
IFC and UFC, and on the Executive, Academic Affairs and Budgetary Affairs
committees. I currently chair the IFC Research Affairs Committee. I have served
as School of Medicine Faculty President. The next IFC President will need to
clearly articulate the faculty’s vision for Input’s distinctive role within the
University and the State, and to engage the faculty in all the schools to
ensure that the faculty’s voice is clearly heard.
Martin Spechler (IR01 Tenured Professor) (Liberal Arts: Economics)
IFC Representative At-Large 1998-06
IUPUI Representative to the UFC 1998-05
IFC Faculty Affairs Committee 1997-98
IFC Fringe Benefits Committee 1999-00
IFC Executive Committee
Candidate’s
Statement: Now in my 22th year at IUPUI, I
have served eleven terms on the IFC (one on its Executive Committee) and seven
elected terms on the University Faculty Council, with 100% attendance. My
many committee assignments and chairmanships include Faculty Affairs, Budgetary
Affairs, and Fringe Benefits. Were I to be elected, I would remain
at IUPUI for the last two years before my early retirement. As professor
of economics, I have won three teaching awards and published over 100 articles
and two books. I have also been a consultant to USAID, the World Bank,
the Global Development Network, and the U.S. State Department, traveling several
times to Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia for applied
research. My main priorities as presiding officer of the UFC and
president of the IFC would be to assure equity for our campus, increase
international contacts and education, and raise support for salaries and
research. I know the President and most of the chancellors and top
executives of IU and can thus be a strong advocate for our interests as
teachers, scholars, and creative artists. I have presided over several
organizations in the past and recognize the responsibility of the chair for
careful listening and fairness to all.
