I will or I at least want to go back to school after some time for something related to either finance or international policy/development/relations. I had a great time while I was in graduate school at IUPUI and the Department of Economics is excellent. I personally think the IUPUI Economics Department is better than those at IU-Bloomington and Purdue-West Lafayette.

2000

Dorothy W. Etter
BA, 2000, Economics
Occupation/Employer: Ariba, Inc.
News: Upon graduation I moved to Pittsburgh with my new husband and started working for an interesting “dot com” company, FreeMarkets. The concept of the company was to apply “free market” forces to the purchasing of Fortune 500 companies through the use of Internet-enabled auctions. My original title was “Market Maker”. It’s been an interesting adventure to actually see some of the economic concepts of market forces, such as supply and demand, actually play out in real-world scenarios. Our company and concept has been the subject of several economics papers and at least one book! We have gone through changes, including a merger with a former competitor, Ariba, but it has continued to be interesting to build a new business and see so much of my academic experience in a real business case.

I am not using my economics degree, per se, but my college experience and especially the “ Business School” prerequisites that I took in college are helping me. When I started at Mako Steel Inc. in California (I moved to San Diego in March of 1992), I was the third employee and now we have 14 employees. Our company has grown tremendously and has had terrific luck in hiring the right people. Luckily in college, I learned to be a very organized student, and that has helped me the most at my job.
