Objectives:

  1. To talk about trains.
  2. To listen to Trains: A True Book or The Train to Lulu's and share (orally) new information about trains.
  3. To draw a train or parts of a train from memory.
  4. To construct a "cool" train or train station .
  5. To write a story with illustrations about a favorite train

Materials:

blocks paper tiles Play doh crayons

markers cassette tapes train set Library Nook Display

Preparation for the Lesson: Visit the local train station. Bring a picture or postcard of a train. Find a special train book.

Special note: Your calendar should reflect the themes for each week.

Procedures:

  1. Share the agenda.
  2. Brainstorm what we could learn about trains.
  3. View clips from "I Love Toy Trains" and "Choo Choo Train: Close up and Very Personal."
  4. Listen to Trains: A True book by Darlene Stille (Highlights). Tell one fact about trains. (This book includes online sites.)
  5. Move and Sing Like Trains. Sing new train songs-- "Little Red Caboose" (Zydeco) and "The Railroad Choo Choo Shoes" (Roth).
  6. Organize for another day or later in the day from this list--
  1. Play train music while the children work.
  2. Review the day's activities and make plans for tomorrow. Give a sneak preview of something that may happen during the week.
