The Frederick Douglass Papers Series Four

Series Four, Editorials, Essays, and Other Writings will consist of two volumes containing selections from Douglass's published and unpublished works.

Volume One will include Douglass’s novella The Heroic Slave (1853), more than fifty miscellaneous pieces of journalism, a small number of short pieces of poetry, and his diary from travels in Europe and Africa in 1886 and 1887.  Editorial work on this project currently is underway with anticipated publication in 2015. A special paperback edition of The Heroic Slave, coedited by Robert Levine, John Stauffer, and McKivigan should be in print from Yale University Press in 2014.

Volume Two will include a selection of approximately 250 of Douglass’s editorials from the four newspapers he owned and edited: North Star (1847-51), Frederick-Douglass’ Paper (1851-60), Douglass’ Monthly (1859-63), and the New National Era (1870-72).
