Diversity Planning & Improvement
Campus Diversity Officer Design Team
Between now and January 31, 2007, the Campus Diversity Officer Design Team (CDODT) will undertake the following activities:
- Study the roles and responsibilities of CDOs at universities across the country, particularly at other urban research universities, including IUPUI’s designated peers. Shelton Woods has assembled much of the information you will need in this connection.
- Obtain a sense from the IUPUI campus community about the role and responsibilities a CDO for this campus needs to undertake.
- What specific responsibilities should this new officer have as a member of the Chancellor’s staff and how will these duties supplement/differ from those of the Affirmative Action Office? Some responsibilities to consider include the following:
- Hiring and retaining administrators, faculty, and staff.
- Recruiting and retaining students.
- Embedding diversity education in curricula and in extra-curricular activities.
- Developing multicultural interactions with the community.
- Improving the campus climate for diversity.
- Applying for grants designed to enhance campus diversity.
- Providing career advice for IUPUI graduates.
As a result of your studies and deliberations, The CDODT will provide the Chancellor by Wednesday, January 31, the following:
- A draft position description for the IUPUI CDO.
- A draft advertisement for the position.
IUPUI anticipates naming a search committee prior to the completion of this work. The documents that the CDODT prepare will guide the work of that group.
