Since summer 2006 work has been underway reviewing and developing a new diversity mission, vision and goals to serve the campus for our next generation of work. A significantly updated new mission, vision and goals for diversity have been developed. The proposed new document has been reviewed and benefited from comments from the Chancellor's Diversity Cabinet, the Dialogue Group, The Deans Council, Faculty Council, Staff Council, Undergraduate Student Government, Graduate Student Organization and direct comment from the web.
A final proposal has been sent to the Chancellor for his consideration. The new mission, vision, values and goals for diversity will assist the campus as we move forward with our next generation of diversity advancing work.
Law School Diversity Council in Action

Dean Susannah Mead has appointed the first Diversity Council of the Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis. The members of the council are: Dean Angela Espada, Associate Dean for Student Services and Admissions; Dean Andrew Klein, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Associate Clinical Professor Robert Lancaster; Associate Professor María Pabón López, Chair of the Diversity Council; and Assistant Director of Professional Development, Tamara McMillian. The liaison from the Ruth Lilly Law Library is Reference Librarian Debra Denslaw. The law student members, who are leaders in the student group Committee for Diversity Initiatives ("CODI") are Nandini Mascarenhas, Jasmine Parsons and L.L.M. student Mariana Sgarbi.

Diversity Plan for the School of Engineering and Technology

The Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology initiated the development of a school diversity plan which supports the campus vision and goals for diversity with the establishment of the Diversity Council for the school. Membership on the council included representation from the faculty, staff, engineering administration as well as local industry. The charge given to the council is: 1) review of the Campus Vision and Goals; 2) development plans for the School’s Vision and Goals that are consistent with the campus goals and; 3) Identification of steps and action items to accomplish the goals.

The main purpose of the Black Student Resource guide is to provide adequate and accurate vital information to assist in the retention and graduation of black students at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis. The Black Student Resource guide contains resources for undergraduate and graduate students that relate to social and academic life at IUPUI. Some of the resources include helpful tips about the classroom, what are the hardest classes for black students, scholarship information, area churches, and places to hangout, Black Student Organizations, Black faculty and staff, and much more.

The Roots of Diversity at IUPUI

Diversity is a very tricky concept. Part of that has to do with the definition people apply to diversity and how they feel it should be obtained. At the root of diversity is difference; the fact that people are different from one another. It is rather clear to anyone on this campus that we are very diverse. We have many students, faculty, and staff on this campus who have different belief systems, different ethnic backgrounds, and different experiences. All these groups have different ideas and world views...

National Diversity Award Honors David Wilkes, M.D.
INDIANAPOLIS – David S. Wilkes, M.D., has been awarded the 2007 Association of Professors of Medicine Diversity Award.
The award recognizes individual meritorious achievement in improving diversity at a medical school. Dr. Wilkes is director of the Indiana University School of Medicine Center for Immunobiology and a professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology, and biochemistry and molecular biology.
The national honor was presented at the 2007 Association of Professors of Medicine Winter Meeting Feb. 28-March 3 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
