The pediatrics residency program at Indiana University School of Medicine is primarily based at Riley Hospital for Children, the only academic referral hospital in Indiana. Residents spend 1-2 months each year at Wishard Memorial Hospital and Methodist Hospital. All three hospitals are linked on an integrated downtown campus. Riley Hospital for Children and Wishard Memorial Hospitals are adjacent to each other on the IUSOM campus. Methodist Hospital is located about a mile away, and is linked by a brand new $40 million monorail system that shuffles residents, staff, and visitors between the hospitals every 10 minutes. Together, these facilities provide a network of primary, secondary and tertiary pediatric care. Wishard Memorial Hospital has been an integral part of the IUSOM campus for over 100 years. Riley Hospital for Children has been the primary referral center for the state of Indiana for over 75 years. In 1997 Methodist, Indiana University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children united to form Clarian Health. The three hospitals in the residency program, serve as the referral center for a population of 5.6 million people. Each hospital provides a library with computer access, open 24 hours a day, exclusively for the use of pediatric residents. Both campuses have state of the art medical libraries adjacent to the hospitals. Medical informatics systems between the three facilities are linked; available services include patient data, radiology images, order entry and Internet access. The community health centers are also linked with the hospitals to instantaneously transfer patient data. These systems establish an efficient and accurate medical record for physicians providing care to patients at each of the training sites. |
