Critical Care
  Curriculum Overview

Proficiency in critical care is one of the distinguishing features of the field of Pediatrics. We provide a graduated experience each year in neonatal ICUs, anesthesia/procedures, pediatric ICUs, and emergency department rotations.

Skills in stabilization of critically ill children across the ages is key to general and specialty practice.

The residents develop the skills needed to practice critical care as a competent pediatrician, with the ability to diagnose, stabilize, and initiate treatment of children with critical illness. During their two Pediatric Intensive Care Unit rotations at either Riley or Methodist, residents gain the skills and knowledge needed to recognize and confidently manage any pediatric emergency. Both modern facilities are equipped with sophisticated equipment, specialized intensive care personnel and excellent teaching faculty. Clinical experience with critical diseases of childhood and traumatic illness are broadened through bedside rounds and didactic presentations.

Residents have one block rotation in the NICU each year, and receive additional delivery room experience and training in the PGY-2 night float rotation. Residents rotate through the main referral NICU at Riley and one of the other NICUs at Methodist or Wishard which provides a broad range of level II and III NICU experiences. There are over 7,000 deliveries annually on our campuses with pediatric residents attending all high risk deliveries.

In these settings, residents become confident in their abilities to provide resuscitation, stabilization, transport and treatment of seriously ill newborns. The large volume of patients provides exposure to all types of newborn disease, including complex cardiac and surgical conditions. In modern facilities, neonatologists, with the other pediatric subspecialists, deliver care and teach residents state-of-the-art critical newborn care.

Additional opportunities are available to participate in the Transport Team to work with highly skilled nurses and respiratory therapists to provide air or ground transport services. For residents who desire additional experiences, residents can also moonlight in different NICUs on campus.
