Riley Hospital for Children
Riley Hospital for Children, a 255 bed facility, was named after the poet, James Whitcomb Riley, whose poetry reflected his love of children. The hospital is devoted exclusively to providing comprehensive care to children. Today, Riley is one of the 15 largest children's hospitals in the nation, providing many otherwise unduplicated services to patients throughout the state of Indiana. Riley-based IU School of Medicine physicians, along with nurses and staff, care for more than 10,000 inpatients a year in one of the country's most intensive care-bedded facilities. The Riley transport team makes over 1,200 runs a year, providing referral services and transportation to meet children's critical and tertiary care needs. The parent care unit has served as a model for other children's hospitals where the family fulfills the primary function of delivering the child's care. Specialized care from all members of the health care team is provided in the Cancer Care Center and Heart Center. Annually there are over 120,000 outpatient visits to the newly opened Riley Outpatient Center (ROC) across the entire range of specialty services. In addition to its reputation as a premier children's facility, Riley also serves as a major educational facility for physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals serving children's health needs.
