Dr. Klenck rounding on a peds servicePrimary care pediatric experiences are distributed between Riley, Methodist and Wishard. The Indiana University primary care faculty have established a managed care organization which extends care to a network of urban, inner-city and rural sites. Both the university faculty and private practitioners contribute as preceptors in our educational process. Residents quickly develop skills in the evaluation and management of well child care, in addition to common pediatric problems such as respiratory illness, infectious diseases, behavioral concerns and minor trauma. Ambulatory block rotations in child development and adolescent care are required. Almost fifty percent of pediatric training occurs in the ambulatory setting.

All residents have normal newborn experience combined within general pediatric rotations. There are over 7000 deliveries annually at the three hospital sites, with pediatric residents attending all high-risk deliveries. Newborns evaluated in the nursery are invited to receive ongoing care in the residents' continuity clinics. Neonatal intensive care rotations are included at the intern and supervisory levels, including delivery room resuscitation experience. The large volume of patients provides exposure to all types of newborn diseases, including complex cardiac and surgical conditions.

There are 44 pediatric intensive care beds at Riley and 16 at Methodist, all with modern facilities and skilled ancillary services. Teaching includes well-supervised direct patient care, bedside rounds and didactic presentations.

Pediatric inpatient services include general pediatric services at each of the hospitals and subspecialty services at Riley. Inpatient and ambulatory/consultative opportunities exist with a comprehensive range of pediatric care specialists. Our expert clinical subspecialists, complemented by creative research programs, provide a lively intellectual environment. Each resident may choose four pediatric electives. Pediatric emergency and urgent care is provided at Methodist, Riley and Wishard Hospitals. Residents learn to manage a wide variety of urgent, emergent and toxicological problems. At Methodist, adult and pediatric emergency care are merged under the supervision of emergency department faculty. The Primary Care Center at Wishard cares for pediatric emergent and urgent care patients with pediatric faculty on site for supervision and consultation. The adjacent emergency department also serves as a trauma center. In the Riley Emergency Department, residents are exposed to common pediatric emergency care, in addition to children with complex problems who have been referred to Riley pediatric subspecialists.
