Dear Colleague:
Thank you for your interest. On this website we aim to provide you with a useful description of our training program.
We invite you to consider a visit to Indianapolis. The School of Medicine at Indiana University offers a unique opportunity for residents to train in a four year combined medicine-pediatric program leading to Board eligibility in both disciplines. This program is built on the foundations of internal medicine and pediatrics to prepare the resident to provide health care for the entire spectrum of ages from infancy through old age.
The particular strengths of the Indiana University med-peds program may be summarized in:
1) the individual strengths of the medicine and pediatric departments, and
2) our long-term commitment to the combined program.
The strength of our departments lies in our elite faculty, our range of facilities, our strong and collegial resident peer group and our diverse patient population. Our faculty include large divisions of both general medicine and general pediatrics who create an educational focus on primary care within a managed care system. Our subspecialty faculty encompass all fields of adult and pediatric care, and residents benefit by training with experts. Individual faculty focus on patient care, teaching, and/or research; their collaboration allows the departments to fulfill their missions, fostering excellence in all three areas. Our multi-hospital program supports a broad base of primary and tertiary care training sites within both community and university settings, thereby creating an exceptional environment for the new physician. The primary care population is drawn from the Indianapolis area (population 1 million), with a subspecialty referral base extending to most of the state of Indiana (population 5.6 million).
The med-peds residency was developed by our departments in 1982. Its success is evident through our residents' and graduates' satisfaction and in the program's growth. Our current roster of 52 combined medicine/pediatrics residents are fully integrated members of both departments, performing as full partners with their medicine and pediatric peers. In addition, residents value the combined curriculum for its unique med-peds activities, i.e. continuity clinic, combined rotations, faculty and lectures.
We look forward to hosting your visit to Indianapolis. The web pages that follow will tell you more about our program and the opportunities that Indianapolis has to offer.
