Vacations include 3 calendar weeks in post-graduate years 1 and 2 and four calendar weeks in post-graduate years 3 and 4. Vacation time must be evenly distributed between both departments. Residents receive an annual stipend for books or approved continuing medical education activities. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric ALS, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification and re-certification are integrated into the training program. Residents are provided with opportunities to take the ABIM and ABP in-training examinations.
Residents attend a two-day retreat early in the second year of residency to enhance their teaching/supervisory skills as they transition to upper level residents and a PGY4 two day retreat to increase practice management skills, including managerial and financial training. There are opporunities to attend additional leadership retreats. Introductory journal subscriptions and AAP and ACP memberships are supplied. Health/dental/disability/life and malpractice insurance is provided. Residents receive meals while on call, parking, and lab coats. Periodic social events are offered in both departments, as well as Med-Peds specific events for enjoyment and camaraderie. Exercise facilities at the IUPUI Natatorium and the National Institute for Fitness and Sport are available on campus to faculty, students and housestaff.
