Reviewing X raysApproximately 363 full-time faculty members work in the Department of Medicine. The department consists of eleven divisions: biostatistics, cardiology, clinical pharmacology, endocrinology and metabolism, gastroenterology and hepatology, general medicine, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary and critical care medicine, and rheumatology. All faculty members contribute to the teaching of students, housestaff, and fellows, the majority consider it their most important and enjoyable responsibility. Faculty include the range of master clinicians, renowned researchers and exuberant clinician educators. The department ranks among the top 25 of the nation's 125 academic medical centers in attracting research support from the National Institutes of Health. Faculty direct NIH Center grants in diabetes, alcoholism research, cancer, renal disease, and sexually transmitted diseases. Our faculty and fellows conduct hundreds of protocols to investigate new therapies. For our residents, these research strengths provide exposure to ongoing clinical trials, contact with expert guest lecturers from all over the world, opportunities for patient oriented or bench research electives, and day-to-day interactions with our faculty. The Division of General Internal Medicine is one of the oldest, largest and most comprehensive academic primary-care divisions in the nation, with more than 85 faculty.
