Center for Service and Learning Timeline
1993 Campus team attends Campus Compact Institute and establishes the Office of Service Learning.
1994 Faculty workshops and campus funds support service learning. United Way Day of Caring begins.
1995 Chancellor Bepko supports President Clinton's "America Reads Challenge" and tutoring begins on the near Westside.
1996 IU Strategic Directions funding supports three-year project, resulting in the publication of Service@Indiana University: Defining, Documenting, and Evaluating.
1997 Office of Neighborhood Partnerships established, and campus begins HUD-Community Outreach Partnership Center with Westside Cooperative Organization.
1998 Campus selected by AAHE and Campus Compact as a model program for institutionalizing service learning. Dr. Robert Bringle receives the national Ehrlich Award as an outstanding service-learning educator.
1999 Community Service Scholarship Program established with campus funding. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day-On of Service begins.
2000 IUPUI selected to participate in CHESP international project; hosts a team from University of the Free State (South Africa) and sends a team to South Africa.
2001 Center for Service and Learning formed by combining Office of Service Learning with the Office of Community Service and the Office of Neighborhood Partnerships.
2002 CSL selected eighth best service learning program by U.S. News and World Report.
2003 Community Service Scholarship Program renamed to the Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholarship program in honor of the Sam Jones, long-time Director of the Indianapolis Urban League. Campus designates Commitment to Excellence funds for civic engagement.
2004 Chancellor's Civic Engagement Awards for Faculty and Community established. Office of Community Work Study established.
2005 IUPUI recognized by U.S. News and World Report for having one of the best service-learning programs in the nation for the third year in a row. IUPUI selected by the Princeton Review as a "College with a Conscience" in recognition of its commitment to engaging students in and with the community.
