Debby Atkinson

Title: Assistant Director

Company: Greenwood Parks and Recreation

Major: Communication Studies

Minor:  Anthropology

Favorite Communication Class:  Principles of Interviewing,  I used information from that class to help me interview for jobs.  I also have to interview applicants in my current job, so it has helped me in that aspect as well.

How she found her job: I did an internship for the City of Greenwood’s Parks and Recreation Department.

What a Normal Day Looks Like: My normal day consists of planning activities and organizing programs.  In the fall the two biggest programs I am involved with are Adult Softball and fitness classes.  I have to make sure that the programs are running smoothly and that all the employees involved with the programs have everything that they need.

What She Likes Best: I get to talk to and interact with people all day.  I am not stuck in a cubicle staring at a computer all day.

What She Likes Least: Finding employees that are reliable.  It is very stressful when someone calls in at the last minute and I have to scramble to find someone to replace them.

How a degree in Communication Studies has prepared her: It is very important in my job that I communicate effectively, through either written or verbal language, with my co-workers as well as the public.  We have a number of programs going on at one time, and everyone needs to be properly informed of what each program is and what is happening with it.  This is not only helpful to all of the employees here, but it also allows us to help customers.

I use a skill I learned in Family Communication almost everyday.  I have to deal with somebody who is upset, or has a concern, and when this happens I just listen and then repeat back to the person a paraphrased version of what was just said so that the person knows that I understand and that I am listening.   I have found that this calms the situation down and that it is easier to resolve the problem.
