Student-Athletes
Student-Athletes are responsible for following the rules outlined in the Department of Intercollegiate Athlete's Student-Athlete Handbook. Of special importance:
Student-Athletes must comply with the Department of intercollegiate Athletics Student-Athlete Drug and Alcohol Policy. This includes completion of the NCAA Drug Testing Consent document as well as signing the NCAA Student-Athlete Statement. These documents will be provided at your first Team Meeting each year. All NCAA International Student-Athletes are required to complete the NCAA International Student-Athlete Amateurism/Eligibility Questionnaire and Statement prior to the start of the initial season of competition. IUPUI Office of International Affairs provides many services for students from abroad. Freshmen are required to attend the Student-Athlete Mentor Program for a minimum of four hours each week. If the student achieves a 3.0 gpa for the fall semester, the student is excused from mentoring in the spring. University College student-athletes must meet with the SAAA twice each year to discuss academic goals and progress toward these goals. Register for classes at your assigned day and time. Be aware of the dates and deadlines for drop/add. File the FAFSA for financial aid by March 1 each academic year. Any student who qualifies for Federal Financial Aid must meet the following financial aid standards for satisfactory progress. Please note these requirements are separate from the NCAA's Continuing Eligibility Requirements outlined below. Should you be close to graduation, be sure to meet your school's deadline for filing for graduation. For more information visit Graduation Tips. Continuing Eligibility In order to compete, student-athletes must maintain satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.
Items 3 through 6 apply to students who enroll first-time full-time prior to August 1, 2003
Items 7 through 13 apply to students who enroll first-time full-time on or after August 1, 2003
Courses & Faculty InvolvementPrior to the start of the semester, your faculty will be sent a list of dates which you would need to miss in order to travel or compete. They are asked to determine how they would handle these absences and to notify the Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes if they pose a serious issue. This may result in the Academic Advisor recommending that you drop a particular course and find another where the missed dates would not be as much of a problem. You should also discuss this schedule with each Faculty member to determine how you will make up any missed work or to make arrangements for tests or quizzes should those fall on dates when you would be gone. Faculty will be asked to provide feedback on your performance to the Academic Advisor for Athletes approximately one-third the way into the semester. Athletic Grant-in-Aid Renewal DeadlineAccording to NCAA Bylaw 15.3.5.1, the University is required to notify you of your renewal or non-renewal of your athletically-related financial aid by July 1. Should your aid not be renewed, you may have the right to appeal by following the guidelines outlined in that bylaw.
UpdatesAll students who receive Federal Financial Aid must have the following minimum cumulative gpa:
Example:At the end of the a Spring semester, a student who has completed 32 hours has achieved a cgpa of 1.75. This student would be notified by the Financial Aid Office that he/she was being placed on financial aid probation. Probation involves the requirement of the student completing the Academic Progress Contract. The student would be eligible to receive federal aid - i.e., Pell Grant - (although student loan amounts would be limited) through the upcoming Fall semester. However, if the student does not reach the desired threshold at the end of the that Fall semester, subsequent federal aid for the subsequent Spring semester would not be permissible. Students must also complete a minimum of 75% of the credit hours for which they receive a grade each semester. Example, if a student enrolls in 12 hours they must complete 9 credit hours. Completion of a course for credit requires a grade that indicates the student has finished all work for the course during the semester for which assistance was requested.
