Student-Athletes

Student-Athletes are responsible for following the rules outlined in the Department of Intercollegiate Athlete's Student-Athlete Handbook. Of special importance:

  1. You must notify the Compliance Office if you plan to hold a job.

  2. You must meet with the Student-Athlete Academic Advisor (SAAA) if you intend to change majors. Failure to do so may result in loss of eligibility.

  3. You must notify the SASS if you wish to change your course schedule through drop/add. Any changes after the first week will require the SAAA or Compliance Coordinator granting you on-line clearance to make the change.

  4. You must notify the Compliance Office of all athletically related activity, including non-institutional competition. Failure to do so may result in loss of eligibility.

Student-Athletes must comply with the Department of intercollegiate Athletics Student-Athlete Drug and Alcohol Policy. This includes completion of the NCAA Drug Testing Consent document as well as signing the NCAA Student-Athlete Statement. These documents will be provided at your first Team Meeting each year.

All NCAA International Student-Athletes are required to complete the NCAA International Student-Athlete Amateurism/Eligibility Questionnaire and Statement prior to the start of the initial season of competition.

IUPUI Office of International Affairs provides many services for students from abroad.

Freshmen are required to attend the Student-Athlete Mentor Program for a minimum of four hours each week.  If the student achieves a 3.0 gpa for the fall semester, the student is excused from mentoring in the spring.

University College student-athletes must meet with the SAAA twice each year to discuss academic goals and progress toward these goals.

Register for classes at your assigned day and time. Be aware of the dates and deadlines for drop/add.

File the FAFSA for financial aid by March 1 each academic year. Any student who qualifies for Federal Financial Aid must meet the following financial aid standards for satisfactory progress. Please note these requirements are separate from the NCAA's Continuing Eligibility Requirements outlined below.

Should you be close to graduation, be sure to meet your school's deadline for filing for graduation. For more information visit Graduation Tips.

Continuing Eligibility

In order to compete, student-athletes must maintain satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.

  1. The student must complete a minimum of six credit hours in the previous semester full-time enrollment.

  2. The student must be enrolled for at least twelve credit hours each semester.

Items 3 through 6 apply to students who enroll first-time full-time prior to August 1, 2003

  1. The student must complete an average of twelve credit hours each semester of enrollment with no more than 25% of these hours earned in summer school. This means that if a student does not complete twelve credit hours in a particular term, the hours may be made up in a summer session with a maximum of six credits over the course of the summer.

  2. A student must have completed 25% of the degree requirements with a cumulative gpa of 90% of the degree-school's minimum gpa requirement by the beginning of the student's fifth semester.

  3. A student must have completed 50% of the degree requirements with a cumulative gpa of 95% of the degree-school's minimum gpa requirement by the beginning of the student's seventh semester.

  4. A student must have completed 75% of the degree requirements with a cumulative gpa of 95% of the degree-school's minimum gpa requirement by the beginning of the student's ninth semester.

Items 7 through 13 apply to students who enroll first-time full-time on or after August 1, 2003

  1. The student must pass 24 credit hours prior to the start of their 3rd semester following their initial full-time enrollment.

  2. The student must pass 18 credit hours since the preceding two semesters.  Summer hours may not be used to fulfill this requirement.

  3. During the first two years of enrollment, a student who has not designated a specific degree program may use credits acceptable toward any degree program.

  4. A student must be required to have a designated program of studies to a specific degree by their 3rd year or 5th semester of enrollment.  Any credits, from this point, must be used to meet the progress towards the student’s designated degree requirements.

  5. A student entering their third year of enrollment must complete at least 40% of the course requirements in the student’s specific degree program.

  6. A student entering their fourth year of enrollment must complete at least 60% of the course requirements in the student’s specific degree program with a cumulative gpa of 100% of the degree-school’s minimum gpa requirement.

  7. A student entering their fifth year of enrollment must complete at least 80% of the course requirements in the student’s specific degree program with a cumulative gpa of 100% of the degree-school’s minimum gpa requirement.

  8. Any credit hours earned by a student while enrolled part-time shall not be used to meet progress toward their degree requirement unless the student is held accountable for their term of enrollment at the time of certification.

  9. If a student is ruled ineligible under the provisions of the progress toward degree legislation at the beginning of a term, they can regain eligibility at the beginning of any other regular term within that student’s academic year, based upon the student’s subsequent fulfillment of the necessary degree requirements.

Courses & Faculty Involvement

Prior to the start of the semester, your faculty will be sent a list of dates which you would need to miss in order to travel or compete. They are asked to determine how they would handle these absences and to notify the Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes if they pose a serious issue. This may result in the Academic Advisor recommending that you drop a particular course and find another where the missed dates would not be as much of a problem. You should also discuss this schedule with each Faculty member to determine how you will make up any missed work or to make arrangements for tests or quizzes should those fall on dates when you would be gone.

Faculty will be asked to provide feedback on your performance to the Academic Advisor for Athletes approximately one-third the way into the semester.

Athletic Grant-in-Aid Renewal Deadline

According to NCAA Bylaw 15.3.5.1, the University is required to notify you of your renewal or non-renewal of your athletically-related financial aid by July 1. Should your aid not be renewed, you may have the right to appeal by following the guidelines outlined in that bylaw.

Updates

All students who receive Federal Financial Aid must have the following minimum cumulative gpa:

0-25 hours completed 1.60
26-55 hours completed 1.80
56-124 hours completed 2.00

Example:

At the end of the a Spring semester, a student who has completed 32 hours has achieved a cgpa of 1.75. This student would be notified by the Financial Aid Office that he/she was being placed on financial aid probation. Probation involves the requirement of the student completing the Academic Progress Contract. The student would be eligible to receive federal aid - i.e., Pell Grant - (although student loan amounts would be limited) through the upcoming Fall semester. However, if the student does not reach the desired threshold at the end of the that Fall semester, subsequent federal aid for the subsequent Spring semester would not be permissible.

Students must also complete a minimum of 75% of the credit hours for which they receive a grade each semester. Example, if a student enrolls in 12 hours they must complete 9 credit hours. Completion of a course for credit requires a grade that indicates the student has finished all work for the course during the semester for which assistance was requested.
