Section 14 - PARTICIPATION IN OUTSIDE COMPETITION
14.1 Basic Rule for Student-Athletes Participation in Outside CompetitionIn all sports except basketball, student-athletes may not participate on any outside team during the year, except during the institution's official vacation periods, i.e., summer, Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, Spring break. A student-athlete is permitted to practice on such a team at any time as long as he/she does not compete. In basketball, a student-athlete may not practice or compete on any outside team at any time after he/she has become a member of the team (there are limited exceptions to this during the summer). 14.2 Written Permission Required for ALL Participation on any Outside (non-IUPUI) TeamPrior written approval from the Director of Athletics is required for any basketball student-athlete participating in outside competition. Summer Basketball League Permission form (Form A) must be submitted to Head Coach prior to participation on any Outside Team. Basketball Head Coach signs the form to signify general knowledge of the intended outside competition. The Head Coach submits the form to the Compliance Office for review. Compliance Coordinator forwards form to Director of Athletics for final approval. NO PARTICIPATION IS PERMISSIBLE UNTIL THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS HAS APPROVED. Soccer, Softball, and Volleyball Outside Competition Permission form (Form B) must be submitted by the student-athlete of these sports to the Compliance Office prior to any participation on an Outside Team. Individual sport student-athletes must notify their respective Head Coach prior to any participation on an Outside Team or in an Outside Event. 14.3 Outside Competition, Sports Other than Basketball, During the Academic YearThe number of student-athletes from IUPUI that may play on the same outside team is as follows:
Other than participation on an outside team during the institution's vacation period and the additional exceptions listed below, student-athletes in sports other than basketball may not participate as a member of any outside team in any noncollegiate, amateur competition. The following exceptions to the outside competition regulations are permitted and do not require a waiver from the NCAA: - High School Alumni Game (one game per year during institution's vacation period) - Olympic Games (includes final tryouts that directly qualify competitors for the Olympic Games) An institution may request a waiver from the NCAA and, upon receipt of such a waiver, participation by student-athletes is also permitted in the following: - Official Pan American Games tryouts and competition - Officially recognized competition directly qualifying participants for final Olympic Games tryouts - Official tryouts and competition involving national teams sponsored by the appropriate Group A members of the U.S. Olympic Committee (or, for the student-athletes competing in a non-Olympic sport, the equivalent organization of that sport) - Officially recognized state and national multi-sport events sanctioned by the NCAA Council Note:A coach who has a student-athlete who wishes to participate in any of the events listed above must see the Compliance Coordinator as early as possible prior to competition so the appropriate waiver can be requested from the NCAA. (2) Outside Competition as Individual/Not Representing IUPUI, i.e., Unattached It is possible for a student-athlete to participate in outside competition as an individual during the academic year in the student-athlete's sport, as long as the student-athlete represents only him/herself in the competition and does not engage in such competition as a member or receive expenses from any outside team. 14.4 Outside Competition, Basketball, During the Academic YearA student-athlete in basketball who participates in any organized basketball competition except while representing IUPUI jeopardizes his or her eligibility. The following exceptions to the outside competition regulations are permitted and do not require a waiver from the NCAA: - High School Alumni Game (one game per year during institution's vacation period) - Olympic Games (includes final tryouts that directly qualify competitors for the Olympic Games) An institution may request a waiver from the NCAA and, upon receipt of such a waiver, participation by a student-athlete is also permitted in the following: - Official Pan American Games tryouts and competition - Officially recognized competition directly qualifying participants for final Olympic Games tryouts - Official tryouts and competition involving national teams sponsored by the appropriate Group A members of the U.S. Olympic Committee (or, for the student-athletes representing another nation, the equivalent organization of that nation or, for student-athletes competing in a non-Olympic sport, the equivalent organization of the sport) - Officially recognized state and national multi-sport events sanctioned by the NCAA Council Note:A coach who has a student-athlete who wishes to participate in any of the events listed above must see the Compliance Coordinator as early as possible prior to the competition so the appropriate waiver can be requested from the NCAA. 14.5 Summer Outside Competition, Sports Other Than BasketballThe limit on the number of IUPUI student-athletes with remaining eligibility who may participate on the same outside team during the summer is as follows:
Departmental policy requires the Head Coach of individual sports to be informed by their respective student-athletes regarding any competition activity that does not involve representing IUPUI. Any student-athlete with remaining eligibility who desires to compete outside of IUPUI must inform the Head Coach. If the Head Coach is concerned about possible negative eligibility impact, the Head Coach should contact the Compliance Coordinator Office immediately. 14.6 Summer Outside Competition, BasketballIn addition to the above exceptions and waiver possibilities listed in Section 14.4 above, members of the IUPUI basketball teams may participate in one summer basketball league approved by the NCAA. Two persons from IUPUI may participate on any one team and the student-athlete must obtain prior written approval from the Director of Athletics before participation in any summer league. [Note: Three-on-three tournaments are included in this limitation.] Members of IUPUI's basketball teams may also participate in state games which are approved by the NCAA, e.g., Hoosier State Games. No more than two IUPUI players may play on the same team and prior written approval must be obtained from the Director of Athletics. Note: A student-athlete who wishes to participate in any summer basketball competition must see the Compliance Coordinator as early as possible prior to participation in order to allow sufficient time to determine whether the event has been approved by the NCAA and to prepare the required authorization letter. 14.7 Participation in Outside Competition FormsFORM A - Summer Basketball League Permission Request Form To be completed by any student-athlete wanting to participate in a summer basketball league.
