The Data Knowledge Cycle The work of the Indiana Children’s Health Services Research section can be organized around the Data Knowledge Cycle. The Cycle represents the development and application of best medical knowledge and evidence. Medical knowledge comprises the corpus of medical literature and expert opinion. We use the tools of clinical guidelines, electronic alerts and reminders, health policy and quality improvement to bring best medical knowledge to bear in clinical practice. Through the use of electronic medical records and electronic claims data collected in clinical practice, a repository of shared clinical experience is formed. We use data mining, statistical analysis, decision analysis, and cost-effectiveness analysis to examine this shared clinical experience. These methods, in combination with clinical research, population research and health policy analysis, contribute back to the corpus of medical knowledge. |
