 The 2nd China Higher Medical Education Management Conference

The 2nd China Higher Medical Education Management Conference was held in Guangzhou Dec. 3-5.  The conference was organized by Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU).  Confucius Institute in Indianapolis is the co-organizer.  President Daren Huang of SYSU and the representatives from the Ministry of Education of China and the Guangdong Department of health and education attend the opening ceremony.   More than 150 delegations from different medical schools in China participated the conference.  Ten presentations were delivered at the general session of the conference by speakers from U.S., Sweden and China.  Dr. Maryellen Gusic, the Executive Association Dean of IUSM led the delegation from U.S.. Dr. Gusic and Drs. Jim Brokaw and Paula Wales of IUSM delivered speeches to the conference respectively and were well received.  The conference provides a good platform for the medical educators in China and the world to exchange ideas and share experiences on different topics in medical education.

Previous Events

In Sept 2007, Dean Brater led a 14-member delegation from IUPUI to visit SYSU.  In April 2008, President Huang of SYSU and Dean Li of SYSU SOM visited IUPUI and signed an agreement of faculty and student exchange between the two medical schools with President McRobbie and Dean Brater.

Steve Leapman, Associate Dean of School of Medicine, in May 2008, David Burr, Chair of Anatomy & Cell Biology, and Bob Yee, Chair of Ophthalmology, in Nov. 2008 visited SYSU respectively to facilitate the exchange programs.

In Nov-Dec. 2008, four faculty members from IUSM participated in the Visiting Professor program to SYSU and delivered lectures to the medical students and faculty of SYSU SOM.  They are:

Dr. Bob Yee of  Ophthalmology,

Dr. Marcus Schamberger of Pediatrics,

Drs. Deanna Willis and Jeffrey Henney of Family Medicine (see photos below).

The first year medical students will be able to participate in a study abroad program at SYSU organized  by the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis.  In addition to learning the Chinese language and culture, they will visit hospitals and the medical school to participate in some basic and clinical activities during the summer program.

The fourth year medical students will have an elective of one month study at one of the eight hospitals of SYSU as exchange students.  SYSU SOM will also send their senior students to IUSM for one months.

In March 2009, two delegations from SYSU SOM visited IUSM.  One delegation led by Ting Huai Wang, Dean of Medical Education, have representative from Department of OBGY, Internal Medicine, Physiology and Medical Education.  They visited IUSM campus, had meetings with Deans and faculty members, audited classes.

In May 2009, eight medical students participated the four-week Study Abroad program at SYSU.  In addition to the Chinese language and culture, they visited SYSU school of medicine three afternoons a week.  They audited the classes, visited hospitals, interacted with the students etc. They have learned a lot about the health care system in China.

In Oct, 2009, two medical students from SYSU did their clinical rotations in Ophthalmology and  OB/GYn at IUSM for one month.

In Dec. 2009, Drs. John Buckley of Medicine, Rong Fan of Pathology, and Sandra Petronio of Communication visit SYSU SOM and gave lectures to the medical students.

In April 2010, two 4th year medical students from IUSM, Lee Tan and Nicholas Klemen did clinical rotation at SYSU for one month in the department of Neurosurgery and Surgical Oncology respectively.

From May 15 to June 12, 2010, six medical students participated the four-week Study Abroad program at SYSU.  Three afternoons a week, they visited hospitals, interacted with the students, audited the medical lectures. Two of them, Kert Qing and Adem Miller, have very good Chinese communication skill and spend the whole four weeks in the hospital to learn about the health care system in China.
