On September 15 and 17, co-hosted by the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis and ICLASS, 2011 Indiana Chinese Language Teacher Workshop was held at Sheraton Hotel downtown Indianapolis. More than 60 Chinese language teachers coming from Indiana and neibouring States and regions such as Chicago and Ohio attended. This workshop included differents sessions such as American education, classroom management, lesson planning, experience sharing et. providing a platform for teachers to share experiences and learn from the experts.

The 2nd China Higher Medical Education Management Conference was held in Guangzhou Dec. 3-5. The conference was organized by Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Confucius Institute in Indianapolis is the co-organizer. President Daren Huang of SYSU and the representatives from the Ministry of Education of China and the Guangdong Department of health and education attend the opening ceremony. More than 150 delegations from different medical schools in China participated the conference. Ten presentations were delivered at the general session of the conference by speakers from U.S., Sweden and China. Dr. Maryellen Gusic, the Executive Association Dean of IUSM led the delegation from U.S.. The conference provides a good platform for the medical educators in China and the world to exchange ideas and share experiences on different topics in medical education.

2011 CHINESE CULTURE SUMMER CAMP AT IUPUI
For language learning, the younger the better. To better prepare our children to learn Chinese language, the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis offers a Chinese Language and Culture summer day-camp for K-8 students. The camp is held on the IUPUI campus, and last for five weeks. Students will have a full curriculum of Chinese language, Chinese games & crafts, singing & dancing, calligraphy, martial arts, and more.
Who: Children of age 5 – 13 at the time of enrollment.
Where: IUPUI campus.
When: Mon. – Fri. July 5 – August 5, 2011; 8:30 AM – 4:15 PM.; Pre & After School Care available 7:30 – 8:30 AM, and 4:15 – 6:00 PM
Costs: $125 per week for those enroll 5 weeks. $150 per week for those enroll on the weekly base. $25 per week for pre- and after-school care. $15 teaching materials and textbooks.
Registration time: Open. $25 one-time discount for enrollment before March 13.

2010 Chinese Teacher Workshop
With the help of Indiana Chinese language teacher Association, the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis organized a Chinese language teachers’ workshop at the Sheraton Hotel downtown Indianapolis from September 23rd to 25th, 2010. The first session was for New Chinese Teachers (0-3 years experience) from September 23rd to 25th. The second session was for all Chinese Teachers from September 24th to 25th. The purpose of the conference is to gather Chinese language teachers an opportunity to develop the skill set that they will certainly employ throughout their teaching career. In addition, this workshop will serve to develop a network/learning community among Indiana’s Chinese language educators and will focus on developing practical teaching skills that will be especially useful to teachers. 48 teachers from Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina and Minnesota attend the workshop.

The Third Indianapolis Chinese Festival organized by Mayor Ballard’s office will be held at downtown Military Park on Sept 12 (Sunday) from 12 -8 PM. The festival is supported by local Chinese organizations, Confucius Institute in Indianapolis, Chinese Culture Network at Eli Lilly, as well as many other community organizations. There will be food and culture booths, games and Chinese folk music and dance performance. The admission is free.

Chinese language and culture camp for students of K-8 was held at IUPUI from July 5 to Aug 6. The campers learn Chinese language, calligraphy, Chinese songs and dances, games and crafts and martial arts. Most of the instructors are from Sun Yat-sen University of China. The TAs and volunteers are students from IUPUI. The kids had a good time.

Chinese language and culture camp for college students was held from May 15 to June 12. A total of 19 students from IUPUI, IUB and Butler participate the camp, among them are 6 medical students. They studied Chinese language and culture at Sun Yat-sen University at Guangzhou for three weeks and then had a culture tour at Beijing for one week. The medical students also visited hospitals and interacted with local medical students. The program grants four credits to the students.

Musical Performers
The Confucius Institute is preparing a music piece called “A la mu han” for occasions such as the Chinese Festival in September and International Festival in November. Furthermore, we would also like to submit this piece to our headquarters in Beijing. If we are selected, we can go to Beijing to perform to the representatives of Confucius Institutes around the world, all expenses paid! Paid Volunteers for Spring Festival Exhibition!!! $6.00/hour!!!
CI-Indy is sponsoring an exhibition about the celebration of the Chinese New Year that is being provided by the Ministry of Culture of China. The exhibition will be from May 1st to May 12th at the Carmel Public Library during normal business hours. This exhibition aims to, through the display of photos and artifacts, offer viewers an opportunity to understand historical evolutions and contemporary changes of the Spring Festival, traditions and customs practiced during the Spring Festival, and the charm of Chinese traditional culture showcased during the Spring Festival. We are looking for volunteers with knowledge of Chinese culture to greet the public at the entrance of the exhibit with information about the Chinese New Year. We will pay $6.00 per hour. The Confucius Institute is looking for IUPUI students that are interested in volunteering and participating in this year’s Indy 500 Festival Parade on Saturday May 29th. Our Institute will be a sponsor and will have a giant dragon balloon that will require quite a few handlers (approximately 30 people) and a few more people to just walk with us. Background
The High School Summer Program provides two weeks of Chinese language and cultural training in China each summer. The Program is open to high school students in 9-12 grade, aging 14-18. Selected students need only pay for their airfare and visas; Hanban (the Office of Chinese Language Council International) provides all in-country expenses, including room, board, transportation, language instruction, cultural activities, and sightseeing tours. The program will take place from July 13th-26th.
The Confucius Institute at IUPUI recruits applicants and also helps choose chaperons (1 per 9 students) but neither IUPUI nor the IUPUI Confucius Institute is an official sponsor of the program.
The program aims to reach students who are interested in China but who have had little or no exposure to China or the Chinese language.
Mission Statement
To promote exchange between the youth of the US and China, and help high school students have a better understanding of the Chinese language and culture, thus to stimulate their interest in learning Chinese.
When
July 13th – 26th
Arrangement of Activities
July 13th, Arrive in Beijing
July 14th -16th, Attend opening ceremony and travel in Beijing
July 17th – 25th, Arrive in Shandong to study Chinese language and culture
July 26th – Return to Beijing and return home
During the program, students will study Chinese language and culture (Paper-cut, calligraphy, brush painting, tea ceremony, martial arts, and etc.) in traditional classrooms, and participate in various cultural activities.
Program Cost
(1) Students and teachers are responsible for their round-trip international airfare, international travel insurance, and visa fees. Approximately $1400
(2) Hanban will cover in-China expenses on room and board, transportation, activities and sightseeing for students and teachers.
Group teachers are required to meet the following qualities
K-12 teaching experiences, Chinese teachers preferred.
A wealth of student management experience.
Love teaching; being responsible and compatible.
Outstanding communication skills and adaptive capacity.
Physical capability of international traveling.
and fulfill following duties:
Help Confucius Institute with pre-departure training.
Accompany students attend all courses and other activities.
Coordinate with Hanban and host schools to supervise the life and security of students, taking primary management responsibilities.
Concern about students; help students physically and psychologically adapt to the new environment. Provide guidance to student behavior.
In case of emergency, such as student illness or loss of passport, keep close contact with Confucius Institute, Hanban, and host school staffs, as well as accompany the students for medical treatment and so on.
After summer camp, collect the feedbacks towards the program from attended students. Submit to Hanban a summary report and recommendations of improvement.
