Confucius Classrooms

The Brownsburg Community School Corporation’s mission statement includes preparing students “to live productively and responsibly in a technical, global society.” Closely aligned to this vision is the Chinese language and culture program that has developed through a partnership with Hanban. Since 2009, the Confucius Classroom in Brownsburg, Indiana, has provided a rich cultural and language  environment for students in grades K-12.  Brownsburg continues to develop opportunities to expand the global experiences of its students. Being designated a Confucius Classroom has allowed the school to have access to personnel and resources which support Chinese language instruction and exposure to the Chinese culture.

The International School of Indiana is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, providing education through pre-K-12. Founded in 1994, ISI is one of the top 50 high schools in the USA (Washington Post).  Among ISI’s 600 students, 116 are taking Mandarin classes.

In 2010, ISI began hosting a Confucius classroom. Besides six local Mandarin teachers, they currently employ two guest teachers from Hanban. Besides language learning, ISI also has also launched a range of activities focusing on Chinese culture, including sending cards on mid-autumn Day, selling moon cakes, a Chinese new year assembly, and so on. The Chinese club, which was founded in 2012, has played a vital role in planning and initiating  these activities.

The Center for Inquiry (CFI) in the Indianapolis Public School district includes three campuses. Two of the schools, CFI/School #84 and CFI/School #2, serve students in grades K-8. The newest school, CFI/School #27 serves students in grades K-7 but will grow to serve students through grade 8 by 2014. The schools are ‘magnet’ schools within the Indianapolis Public School district. Students apply and are selected through a lottery system to attend these schools. CFI/School 84 and CFI/School 2 are authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools, both offering the IB Primary Years and Middle Years programs. CFI/School 27 is a candidate IB school. The mission of CFI and IB schools is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The Center for Inquiry’s Confucius Classroom is supervised by CI-Indy. The three CFI schools collectively serve 1000 students.
