Aural Learning

Aural learners are described as best taking in information by hearing it. Your challenge is to take information that is not spoken (e.g. from the lab manual) and turn it into an aural form that you can study from. Here are some examples to help you get on your way:

INTAKE = To take in the information:

  • attend classes
  • attend discussions and tutorials
  • discuss topics with others
  • discuss topics with your teachers/TA
  • explain new ideas to other people
  • review the online lectures often
  • remember the interesting examples, stories, jokes, real life applications...
  • go to the online prelab lecture & example pictures and explain each to somebody who was not in your section
  • leave spaces in your notes for later recall and 'filling'

SWOT - Study without tears = To make a learnable package:

  • Reduce your prelab lecture notes and lab manual text into bites that you can chew
  • Talk to others to find the holes in your notes.
  • Put your customized notes onto tapes and listen to them.
  • Ask others to 'hear' your understanding of a topic.
  • Read your new notes aloud.
  • Explain your notes to another 'aural' person.

OUTPUT = To perform well in any test, assignment or examination:

  • Imagine talking with the examiner about the topic of the question.
  • Imagine listening to your voice on tape, and write down the answers that you hear yourself saying.
  • Spend time in quiet places recalling the ideas.
  • Practice writing answers to the sample exam questions and previous quizzes.
  • Speak your answers aloud or inside your head
