ENGL W131 Procedure to earn credit:
To gain Special Credit for W131, a student must submit a portfolio of work. Those directions are on the Writing Program web site under special credit. If granted, the student receives three credits but no grade. The W131 is put on their transcripts. Students who do this in their first year at IUPUI pay just a processing fee.
To be eligible to submit a portfolio, the student must be either a transfer student with over one semester of work, a student who is an official student in Honors, or a returning student who can has had a great deal of writing experience. Students who have questions about their eligibility should contact me at msauer@iupui.edu or 274-0091.

TCM 220 Procedure to earn credit
In order to obtain credit by credentials and examination
for TCM 220, Technical Report Writing, students must present the following
documentation:
1. A description of previous training and experience in writing which shows both
advanced study of composition and experience with writing in “real world”
settings.
2. At least three documents written by the student requesting credit. The
documents must be similar to documents required of students in the TCM 220
classes (reports for decision making and manuals). The documents must be of
sufficient quality that they would have earned the grade of B or above in a 220
class in the opinion of two instructors.
3. A written examination on theory and practice for technical communication. The
examination will be based on material presented in Technical Writing: The
Fundamentals by Worley & Fitterling (2007). Questions will be selected from the
following topics:
• The composing process
• The communication process
• Characteristics of technical documents
• Planning documents: Communication context and audience analysis
• Reports: constructing executive summaries and organizing information
• Manuals: assessing user skill-levels and segmenting information
• Revising and editing documents
In the examination, the student will answer questions about these topics and
demonstrate the ability to use these concepts in writing. Questions will usually
be related to the documents the student has presented for review. The
examination must be evaluated at B quality or better by two TCM 220 instructors.
COMM R110 Procedure to earn credit
The student needs to complete the form which is available here. If the statement is deemed appropriate for evaluation, the student will be asked to prepare a portfolio which may contain things like resumes, job descriptions and specific details regarding speaking/presentation occasions.
Credit by Examination: Many students seek to use the national standardized exams process to establish credit for some classes. There are many brands including CLEP, DSST, ECE, TECEP. IUPUI does not accept exam results from all brands AND does not accept all exams from one brand. For example, IUPUI only accepts the following CLEP exams (CAUTION: 35 exams are offered by the testing service available but only these listed are transferrable).
Humanities
General Biology
General Chemistry
Prin. Of Microeconomics
Prin. Of Macroeconomics
Intro to Educational Psychology
American Literature
Analysis and Interpretation of Literature
English Literature
American History I
History of the US II:1856 to Present
Western Civilization I
Western Civilization II
Calculus with Elementary Functions
College Algebra
American Government
Human Growth and Development
Introductory Psychology
In addition, CAUTION: IUPUI has higher passing
requirements that the College Board requires. For example, the college
board states that a 50 is passing for psychology credit, but IUPUI requires a 55
to earn credit. You should carefully review the list of classes and
minimum scores here:
http://enroll.iupui.edu/admissions/resources/clep_credit.shtml
Students are encouraged to collaborate with their academic advisor to learn what
scores are transferable. In addition, while an exam may be transferable
for IUPUI credit, it may not be equivalent to a course required in the BMET
curriculum. In addition, your academic advisor does not have the
ability to override university CLEP acceptance policy.
