Dues - we voted on making the BMES membership, and therefore the $30 dues mandatory.
Several reasons for that:
- Funding from the BMES
- Discounts for BMES conference
- Networking
- Put it on your resume
- Since we are a chapter of the BMES, it makes sense for the members of the chapter to be BMES members as well.
- Other engineering societies require their members to pay dues
- If you require financial assistance to pay the dues, please talk to Dr. Berbari.
- Continuous pizza funding from our BME department if we get many people involved
- Our constitution will then comply with BMES standards and increase our chances for renewal.
Changing the name of the club
- To comply with the BMES constitution, we will change the name of the club to "IUPUI BMES Student chapter"
- We need 2/3 of the voters to approve the changes and make them official. For those didn't vote after the meeting, it will be possible to vote at Lakina's desk at SL 220 until 5PM tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb 27).
- The constitution will be posted on the website (under the resources tab) for your review.
Elections timeline
- You can either nominate yourself or someone else for any of the four positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary). If you nominate someone else, please send me the student's name and email. If you wish to nominate yourself, please fill in the nomination form that will be posted on the website tonight, and send it to me by Friday, March 21st.
- If you accept your nomination and your form is submitted, you will give a speech at our next meeting, most likely either on Tuesday (March 25th) or on Thursday (March 27th).
- Election week is April 14-22, and our last meeting of the semester will be either April 22nd or 24th.

The election results are in! The 2006-2007 BME Club officers are:
President-Jennifer Doyle
Vice President-Rachel Meyer
Treasurer- Carol Hargreaves
Secretary- Corinne Wood
We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Charles Turner has graciously donated the money he received as a research award from the school to the BME club in the amount of $1000.
Volunteers are still needed for the children's museum. Forms are available here. Once there are enough volunteers established, we will probably volunteer the same weekend every month (for example, the first or the last weekend every month).
The BME Club will join Dr. Eberhart's team, the Lifeguards, for the Relay for Life, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The relay will take place on June 3 and June 4, 2006, from 10 am to 10 am. This 24 hour relay event raises awareness of the cancer issue in the community and raises funds to fight cancer! The money raised is donated to the American Cancer Society, which in turn gives the money back to the community. This will be a great opportunity for the club to give back to the community and raise cancer awareness and funds. Luminarias will be sold in memory or in honor of someone who has/or is battling cancer. Forms will be available from Jennifer Doyle. Email her at jenmoone@iupui.edu if you are interested.
In the fall of 2006, the BME Club plans on helping the Timmy Foundation by applying the skills we have learned as biomedical engineers to fix medical equipment that is no longer being used by local hospitals. The outdated equipment is updated so that it can be given to clinics around the world to help severely handicapped children. Visit the Timmy Foundation at: http://www.timmyfoundation.org/home.htm.
The official BME Club t-shirts have generated a profit of $150 for our club. They are in the making as we speak. They will hopefully arrive before the end of the semester.
If you are interested in a research opportunity over the summer, contact Dr. Berbari at eberbari@iupui.edu and he will place you with a mentor. Fall and Spring opportunities will be posted during the summer on the BME Club webpage.
Thanks to everyone for a great year! Enjoy your summer!

Robert Stump, director of admissions for the Indiana University School of Medicine, gave a presentation on the admissions requirements and recommendations. If you would like a copy of the materials he handed out, please email me and I will make you a copy. Here are some things he mentioned that are not in the handouts:
|
|
|
One of the concerns BME majors have is the potential for a lower GPA than say, a Biology major. Mr. Stump said that since BME is a more rigorous curriculum, usually the MCAT scores are higher, which compensates for a possibly lower GPA. Also, the admissions board looks at the courses that are taken. Since BME required courses are engineering based, they are looked upon as being harder; therefore, there is more lenience towards the grades received in those classes. Also, the letters of reference from faculty explains the context of the courses, and the relativeness of the grade achieved (for instance, a C in a course might be considered outstanding if the average in the class was a 50%).
There are three non-academic requirements for admission into the IU School of Medicine:
-
Clinical Experience: Job shadowing is preferred over volunteering in a clinical setting. There is an undergraduate elective offered by the Department of Family Medicine that has job shadowing included. Contact Dr. Deanna Willis for more information on this course. Contact Mr. Stump if you would like to be referred to a doctor to shadow.
-
Community Service: 2-3 hours a week or month of continuous volunteer work is recommended. This can be completed in conjunction with the clinical experience if the community service takes place in a hospital setting.
-
Research: To be a research physician, you MUST do research at an undergraduate level; otherwise, research is not required.
*Extracurriculars are not mandatory.
There are 29 people on the admissions board, so a vote of 15 people means that admission is granted to the School of Medicine.
To apply to the School of Medicine, you apply to the American Medical Application Service, which sends your application to the medical schools you specify. Your courses are categorized into five areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, and All Other. The Science GPA and All Other GPA is calculated, and the totals are sent to the various medical schools.
